Default 22b on E-bay...chit-chat or true ?

Talking to a group of people whilst having a Sauna, when the conversation turned to my car and my driving...Blah, blah, blah do you always drive like that, whats the insurance like, etc.....

Then one of the guys said that there was a 22b sold on E-bay last week for 14K it was an import and said to be 'A' condition.

Was he chit-chatting or is this true, if so, I want one.....

Yoza,

there was a 22b on ebay last week, import, being sold from somebody in Blackpool and the last I saw it had a bid of £12.5k on it but I missed the end of the auction so I don't know what the final price was. I've got the registration number of another one jotted down in my phone because I got excited and, jokingly, phoned up for an insurance quote (although for a UK 22b). They said my premium would rise by £15 so I swore and then cried. I thought they'd quote me another few grand at least (with me being under 30)! Trying to convince myself I don't want one now, too rare and all of that. (Who am I trying to kid?!)

I emailed that guy and asked how he intended to sva it as there is no model report so no more can be brought in.

You could buy that car but it would have to sit on the docks until it was 10 years old before you could register it.

Not surprisingly, the guy never responded to my emails!

So what does an import need to be SVA'd? I assumed that you this was still relatively easy, but now included a full emissions test. J

That's always a problem. I've seen a few Imprezas on ebay that don't have model reports and, surprisingly, the sellers never offer to do the SVA for you. I think the people selling these cars know that getting an SVA with no model report would cost £thousands and gloss over this fact in the description. I just wonder how many people have been caught out by this.

I am told a model report on a car of a differing body shape often requires the crash testing of a sacrificial car.

Anyone got a spare 22B to hand?

the SVA that is referred to above is the old test. As of this year they brought in the new SVA test which requires a model report specific to each model. Type Rs and RAs fall foul of this too .

A model report on some cars is available as some importers have had them done. They tend to cost upwards of 5k without the destruction testing. Some of these importers are willing to rent out the model report.

To my knowledge many other greats are affected such as the skyline R34 among others.

This means that only cars of this type under 10 years old already in the country will be available. After 10 years old the cars can be brought in without SVA, they just need an MOT.

The thing I don't understand about this 22B was that the guy was offering it SVA'd., hence me writing to him and asking him how he was doing it. He didn't reply!

Do the new SVA rules mean that there will be no more Impreza's bought in? ...surely an RA would be classed as a 4 Door Saloon & as such the same as a 'normal' WRX or STI?

& i thought there were model reports knocking around for Type R's? ...and would that not cover other 2 door coupes such as the 22B???

I emailed the seller a few questions regarding the car as I would be interested at the right price but have yet to receive a reply. I doubt the car currently on Ebay needs an SVA as it is already registered in the UK where as the original in Japan may have problems.

You will NOT need to crash test this car to get a model report and SVA

That only applies to certain vehicles manufactured after 1st Jan 2003.

It would cost perhaps £2k-£3k to get a model report done (assuming it passes noise + emissions first time - not guaranteed!) which still results in a pretty cheap 22B I think!

There are model reports available for type Rs - you cannot rent them direct, but there are places that will offer a complete package. I do not think these will cover the 22B.

However in my experience it doesn't work this way. I know of one importer who advertises on eBay who hasn't actually bought the car and offers to bid in a coming Japanese auction up to the maximum level specified in the eBay auction - and if that bid doesn't win, the car is not bought. I'm not sure this really conforms to eBay rules to be honest, it seems a bit cheeky - especially as they ask for £1k cash up front to "secure" the bid. If this is the case in this example it could be that the £14k never won the car. Not saying this is how this seller operates, but beware!!!
