Also...what "improvements" did they make to the bugeye vs classic...engine, brakes, suspension, gearbox.
I AM going to join the world of scooby ownership, this sat and need your continued support and encouragement !

I doubt the bug eye will be better that a classic as it weighs more. I guess changes in ECU over the years may affect mpg but to be honest if you are that concerned about MPG get a golf diesel, however if you want to blat around with a permanent smile on your face - BUY a SCOOBY!!

Two of my mates drive classics, 160 miles to a tank no matter if they drive economically or hell for leather mode

My bugeye does 270 to a tank when I drive easy and around 220 when I push it.
I have noticed a slightly better mpg on BP & optimax but totally different performance, with BP & opti beating the standard tescos soup hands down!

All the cars are serviced and maintained regularly with frequent oil changes.

Cant comment about handling as my friends have all had a fair bit of work on their suspension. The interior was updated and was probably a factor that would have made me go for a bugeye anyway. One downside is you get a lot less engine noise than in the classic. I do enjoy driving / being in my mates car, you can really hear the banshee under the bonnet!


Not really the car to buy if you are worried about fuel costs though. I used to spend around 40 a month in my golf I now spend over 160. The grin factor alone is worth it IMHO!

 

On last 10 fill ups on my bug I got worst average of 22, best 28 mpg so call it a steady 25. Can't see this being much diff on a late Classic so not really a deciding factor for anyone I wouldn't think.

 

I have a classic and get exactly the same as you do, so as you say not a deciding factor.

My car would have long since gone if I only got 160miles/tank Sounds more like Evo territory.

 

Getting 160 from a tank in a classic, the driver must be either mental or the car is an sti/wrx import, even then should at least be getting 180 plus.

I get circa 260 mpg from my P1 average driving.

 

Only ever gets 160 unless hes on the motorway. Were up in Derbyshire & South Yorkshire so lots of twisty roads but we dont understand why I get so much better fuel economy.

 

I managed over 350 to a tank on a run to Scotland and I could only fit 52ltrs in it at fill up. Didn't hang around either in my MY00 classic.

don't worry about the fuel, look at the looks of the cars. There will only be one winner (the classic)
