Hey people, was just wondering about the RB5, does it only come in 1 colour?

are all 444 of them excatly the same (apart from owners modds), whats the power like on them? whats the interior like and body kit?

Power is the same as a stock MY99 unless it's the RB5 WR in which case it has the same power as an MY99 PPP which has 237bhp IIRC

 

so you would recomend getting the WR model is slightly more powerful?

 

Depends what you plan to do with the car. If you plan to mod it to the eyeballs then it doesn't really matter.

 

well tbh all i would change would be the wheels if i dident like them, and exhaust system (depending on what 1 comes with it)

cant afford much else lol cos looking on auto trader it looks like a 10k min car

but the fact the WR has slightly more power as standard sounds like worth going for

 

Why not save a few quid and have an MY99 turbo 2000. Get one of these and have a few more £'s for tweaks
With an RB5 you are really just paying for a special edition - flame suit on

Between 6k and 9k depending on mileage , mods etc

 

ok so its a jumped up uk impreza 99 but it comes in the best colour, Blue steel, the only UK car to have this colour. (i'm not really bias )

as with all SE's there is not that much difference from the standard versions. with exception to the 22B!!!

you just have the added bonus of owning a ltd SE.

no need for a flame suit, every1's entitled to their opinion.

I found the rb5 cheaper to insure than a turbo 2000.

 

I looked at many cars when I bought my first scoob, mostly classics, plenty of silver, couple of dark blue, only one RB5. Bought the RB5, cost bit more but IMHO worth every penny. All were great cars, just nice to have something that little bit different. My insurance no different, have you tried Tescos, generally very good quotes, or L&V or privalige are suppossed to be competitive.

 

When I did a quote with tescos, I got exactly the same quote for an RB5 and a turbo 2000.

Being totally serious here..... mid next year I'm thinking of getting my first scoob, so I'm doing a little research. Is there really much difference between an RB5 and a standard car. Afaik there is a Prodive pack that was an option when an RB5 was purchased. If an RB5 has this, and so does a MY00 will there be any difference between the cars other than a few obvious visual differences?

 

17" alloys, quickshift, PIAA driving lamps, better interior.......

 

If your talking about power differences then both cars with PPP will be very similar, best bet is to test drive a few with and without mods or better still get yourself down to some local meets see if you can blag some free rides.

 

the main differnce between the rb5 and a uk spec impreza MY99 if u stripped them down is the solid rear bulkhead, other then that nothing is different that u can just add to the UK spec car.

i think the gearing is slightly different.

at the end of the day its up to the individual if they want to pay a bit extra for a ltd edition, it may not differ that much from a uk spec car but the whole package of the RB5 does make it different and special.

 

That is not a solid rear bulkhead, I'm sorry to burst the illusion, but it is far from solid. The only difference is a bar that runs across the gap bolted on with a single bolt at each end (to support the seat backrest) and a rigid plastic sheet across the opening held on with trim clips.

I have fitted fixed rear seats in my stock UK car, and my other half used to own and RB5...I have also seen an RB5 with all it's seats out for a retrim.

Most of the motoring press at the time of the RB5 launch assumed there was a solid rear bulkhead beacuse the seats don't tip. No body denied it...the biggest difference to the handling was that the car's had 17 inch wheels over standard 16's and that they're geometry had been checked properly before delivery.

The gearing is stock UK

The only mechanical difference between an RB5 and a UK car were the 17 inch wheels and air con as standard

Appearance wise, alcantara trim inserts and fixed rear seats, Steel Blue (Cool Grey Mica) paint, a number plaque in the coin tray below the ashtray ahead of the gearstick, red stitching on the stering wheel and gear ****, and a set of RB5 mats...

The full WR pack (fitted when the car was ordered) gained you the then new Prodrive high rise spoiler, the PPP engine upgrade (which comprised a new ECU, a silicon pipe to the intercooler from the turbo, a back box and a cat free centre section), a quick shift (although I'm not convinced it was much quicker) and white dials with WR written on them.

All of the WR bits could be ordered from you dealer and fitted at a later date with the exception of the WR scripted dials.

A genuine RB5 WR is worth seeking out as they are a little more rare.

Oddly, with 444 built there are probably more RB5's than the total number of UK Imprezas sold in white and red that year

 

All RB5,s have the quickshift. They also have map reading lights and colour coded sills and door handles. The dashboard surround is a special colour subtlely unique to the RB5.
The WR Sport version in addition to the silicon pipe has a special enlarged Y piece connection to the intercooler. The engine put out 237bhp and 260lb/ft of torque which is the same torque figure as the JDM STi of that year.

If that was Prodrive's idea of a quickshift then I'm glad I never bought one for my 98! A few strategically placed, and sized, washers transformed the shift in my car and it always felt more positive than the RB...

Forgot about the map lights and painted black bits, although they became standard on MY00 IIRC.

The Y pipe was a metal affair which was the same as on the Sti from what I could see (I didn't take the intercooler off the RB) so the only silicon pipe I could see was a 90 degree elbow in dark blue going from the turbo to the metal Y pipe...again I'm not entirely sure this wasn't standard on phase 2 cars...
