MY99 power surge

MY99 when accelerating at full throttle between say 80 and 100 (private road) engine seems to sort of surge power then hold back then surge again etc etc.

Would a bad MAF cause that sort of problem? I noticed mine doing this quite badly on the 3hr drive back home. Majority was all motorway or dual carriageway, but sounds the same.
WOL in 4th or 5th and the car "pulses" as it's accelerating.

Is the boost sol. the thing with denso written on it part no. 16102AA160 with two chuncky pipes (one goes to inlet manifold, 1 goes to air intake - engine side of maf) and a blue elect connector ??

All sorted. 
Didn't take long, apart from the amazing dissapearing nut (under the air filter assembly, soon recoverd though!!) gave all the pipes a good clean out
the "joining the two green wires" works a treat.

Yep, everything starts clicking and whiring, make sure you have removed the pipes first and have the sol. unbolted and ready. Connect the two green wires and off it goes !!!! Ensure you have a rag to soak all the **** up that comes out of the ports one you start spraying. Best to wrap the rag round your hand and sit the sol. in it. Gives a bit more control on the angle of spraying. (You will see

You unplugged all the tubes and unbolted the sol first.
You left the lecky connector connected and started the car
Then you connected the two green connectors under the dash (inc. the black for the reset procedure ???)
Then sprayed some brake cleaner in about it and had it wrapped in an old rag so it didn't blow the cr@p all over you and the engine bay
That about it?

As you said,
Pipes off
Sol. unbolted (bottom nut likes to go for a walk under the air filter assy.)
Connect green wires under dash
Get can of brake cleaner ready
Hold sol. in large rag
Turn on ign. DO NOT START THE ENGINE
All valves, sol. etc and fan start to cycle, so lots of clicking / whooshing going on.
At this point Sol. should be pulsing away, so holding it in the rag give it hell with the brake cleaner up both ports. Really give it a good internal
soaking until you A- get tired
B - Get completely covered in dirty fluid
C - fluid running clear out of sol. (and up arm / side of car) is clear.
Once satisfied give it a blast for luck then turn off ignition and let valve drain / dry out whilst turning your attention to the pipes.
Remove pipes one at a time (remember which one goes where!! think the bent ended one goes to the back ) and again give them hell with the brake cleaner, Let them dry out for a couple of minutes and then re-fit.
I also cleaned out the small Dia. hoses that run from the T piece to the actuator. If you have a look you will see
bloody little clips that shred your fingers!!Refit sol. (retrieve bottom nut from under air filter assy)
Complain about the ridiculous size of hand required to fit bottom nut (retrieve bottom nut from under air filter assy again) (remove air filter assy as an option - its a lot easier to get at the little bugg@r)
Re-fit pipes after routing back through adjustable cable ties
Start her up, and go for a bit of a run
And that’s about it!!!

Want to do this in my 93' WRX Ra.
Is the solenoid the one that is vertical denso part 16102 etc? Mine has 3 pipes off it thats all.
Then drop oil level afterwards to proper level, is that correct?
Then ecu reset?

the "joining the two green wires" works a treat.i have a MY00 with a SECS unit so i can reset the ecu from there...bloody annoying that i've got to do it all over again tho

On the drivers side tucked up behind the trim around where your left knee would be if you where sat in a normal driving position. You will find two black and two gren wires, might be taped together in colour pairs i.e. green and green etc. They arn't the biggest things in the world !!

they have black connectors on them, my car is back to running perfect after cleaning the thing too, so thanks all!

all seemed fine until this evening; open throttle in forth i heard a bit of a bang and then had a massive surge forward. thought i'd best check the maf (assuming it is the sensor on top of the airbox pipe), i unplugged it, car coughed a little but carried on running...I guess i’m about to be around £70 out of pocket for a new one?

just a word of warning, DO NOT use a plain posi bit and try and knock the security tabs out of the middle. I did and ended up hammering an allen key into the bolt 'cause i destroyed the posi drive splines...avoid the nervous sweat and go buy a proper one
