Question oil pressure fluctuating?

have made some observations that of late the oil pressure at idle fluctuates wildly between 50 and 30 psi..

is it just down to oil used? (cant remeber the brand Im using now, Scoobyclinic use it by default)

.. I remember when I was using Motul that it was more consistent.

Any thoughts?
ta.

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the gauge, a fluctuation of 20psi does not sound good! Is it ok at higher revs? I can see the gauge move slightly at idle when the oil is still cold on mine, but only in the order of 2 or 3 psi When fully warm it's steady. Let's hope the pump is not cavitating for some reason, and sending through slugs of air!

PS I assume this is the hot idle reading? The figure you quote is way below what you would see after a cold start!

thats the worst I have seen it at following some very hard driving...

normally- (once warmed (175F) under WOT- 100psi approx
warm idle - 75+psi

very very warm- (hard driving) WOT- 90-100psi approx
very very warm (205F) idle 50psi- occasionally swinging down to 35approx..

need to ask SC what oil they used for the service (cant remember)

JGM- no idea if the guage has been reset?
Gauge is phantom (autometer?) mechanical..

You can ignore me then I thought you had Defi's.

I haven't had my oil pressure gauge on the car long enough to be sure but oil pressure (typically in Bar not psi to make it more interested ) is about 3bar when cold idle and 7bar above 2200rpm, once engine hot I see about 5bar above 3000rpm and around 2bar (usually 2.2bar but occasionally when very very hot 1.95bar). It fluctuates like crazy by about 0.4bar on the gauge (SPA) which has a fairly quick refresh rate, I have not had chance to alter it yet.

I don't think it is a problem, but strange that you have not seen it before.

Do you know if it was an OE oil filter?

Perhaps the gauge sender has dirty connections?

PS: considering 2bar = 27psi I would not worry at all.. believe anywhere between 2bar and 5bar so what 27psi and 67psi is fine for idle when hot..

I can blame the 27psi on the 151,000miles and currently a non OE oil filter..
Oil is Motul.

From the figures you give, you must have fairly thick oil in there!
