check out this link:
Doom 3 bench marks
It'll give you an idea of what it will run on and which are the optimal settings, should some specs close to your system.

I think he's just showing off - it'll run just fine. Actually it runs OK on way slower rigs than that. John Cormack is not stupid - he's not going to release a game that won't run on most peeps computers, so it's actually less abusive of hardware than Far Cry I believe. Bu now I'm going to have to give up on buying the Morrettes so I can afford to upgrade the comp anyway....

Sorry guys, was a little tongue in cheek my first comment.
But thanks for pointing me at the other forum for computer stuff.
I've no just got to tune my ram / cpu settings and a fresh WinXP install, with the latest drivers.

The ATi9800pro I started with is now in the P4 system, which I also bought a few bits for (P4C800-E DLX / TwinX XMS3200C2PT amonst others) and running much better.

My original questions on here was along the lines of what could I do to get the most out of my P4/ATi9800pro... well, the basic answer was AMD/ATi.. but then I starting looking at Doom3 reports... so the final purchase (honest) was the 6800GT (and a Zalman 7000B for the P4).

I'm now skint for the rest of the year!

Thanks guys, Alex

I currently have the following which runs Doom 3 at 80+fps from timedemo 1

P4 3.0 @ 3.9
PNY 6800 Ultra
1GB XMS3500 Cas 2
2 x 80GB SATA Raid 1
2 x 160GB SATA Raid 1
1 x DVD-r A106
1 x DVD/CD-R/CD-RW
Hitachi 174SXW

BTW if anybody is interested I'm thinking of floggin the 6800 Ultra as I'm going SFF and will get a x800xt to go in that as the 6800 won't fit...

Nice, might I recommend to you buying the OCZ ram from ebay. I bought my OCZ PC3200 EB 1gb from a trader (brand new) and it was about £40 cheaper than any online store.

You could, but those are the bits I've already bought
