Default Bug eye WRX vs. Classic Turbo

Got a dilemma. Only wanted a Classic Turbo. Then saw some nice bug eyes, so now I'm tempted by both.

Both are within financial reach, well just about. Is there a power difference between a Bug Eye WRX and a Classic Turbo? Don't know too much about the bug eyes, as in power outputs, etc. I've assumed that a bug eye WRX would be more powerful (As I've assumed there would be an equivalent bug eye Turbo), is this correct?

All thoughts appreciated!

The Bug eye WRX is slightly up on power (I believe 222bhp versus 211,215 or 218bhp on a UK classic (JDM ones are different), but don't quote me on that). However, the bug eye is a lot heavier and the power delivery is a lot smoother than the classic, so it feels slower (And it is quite a bit slower in terms of accelleration).

On the other hand, the bug eye has better impact protection and a stiffer shell and the drive is more refined, if that's what you want.

I have a blob eye, and if I was to chose now, I'd go for a classic as I only really use my car on weekends anyway so it doesn't need all the cozyness of a new age (although I'm very happy with having a safer car)

I believe the Bugeye UK WRX was 218PS where my JDM is 250PS (Although that is on Jap 100 RON fuel)

STi's are more power and definitely the one's to go for if your finances can stretch that far. Although I believe there wasn't a UK Classic Sti - they were all imports, but from Bugeye onwards there was.

Can't comment on the differences as I've never drove a classic, but Henrik's comments seem to be fair from other threads I've read here.

225ps, around 218bhp for the bugeye.

208/215bhp for the classic

PS to BHP is 0.9863

So 225PS = 221.9175 BHP

Pretty much 1:1 unless you're really pedantic

I think all imports are automatically chucked into insurance group 20 - where a UK is what? 17?

This is a huge subject and a real can of worms lol

Bug eyed (my01/02) wrx's are 215bhp (218ps), the same as the late classic turbos (my99/00) the blob eyed (my03/04) are 222bhp (225ps).

And my MY02 Bug Eye running no mods made 232bhp recently. 215 is the book figure, so you may be lucky and find a nice one. Mind you I guess the same could be said for a classic.

I had the same dilema and ended up with a 2001 wrx. Reasons being.. Warranty, Air Con as standard, better interior, handling and still fast as f**k....

After a run on a rolling road my Bug-eye was producing 230 Bhp as standard.
It's now on 265 Bhp, with a simple change of back box (WRS Sport version), not too noisey, change of air filter to a Green Panel, a de-cat pipe to the turbo and a session on a rolling road. Total cost to me £1000, luckily the back box came with the car when I bought it last year. One of my friends has a late model classic which he bought brand new, and I prefer the refinement of the newer models. After fitting a front strut brace and having a TSL suspension alignment I find the bug-eye turns in better and handles/rides much better than my friends standard classic, but I have no idea how a classic would perform with similar mods.
Oh, and you don't have to wear a Burberry cap (yet) in a Bug-eye.

Personel preference really go.
Why not think about a PPP classic some bargain ones kicking about at the mo.

MY00PPP cost 12k from dealer beginning of this year but are alot cheaper now. PPP 240bhp and 258 Torque if memory serves me correct.

I like the bugeye but believe in standard trim looks abit poo I would have to buy one with the light convertion plus some extras.

Good Luck

the bug eye weighs in at 1385
the classic shape at 1235

that is 150kg more! that is really going to hurt the power to weight ratio.

my 03WRX is currently running between 265 and 270, with just backbox, green filter, dawes and center decat.....total cost to me, 270quid

dead chuffed

Neil.

P.S to back this up a little bit, i had a few straight line blasts with a PPPd 04WRX, and he could neither gain on me nor i pull away really. So its saved me a few quid
