It really depends how sympathetic a driver you are?

I have an MY94 UK, running 311 Bhp & 272 Torque @ last R & R (John Nobles)
Gearbox is grumbling, Syncro in 3rd & 5th, Its going for the andyF Apexi Ecu soon , so box will die sooner rather than later I think

steve is right, i am at 419bhp and still on my 1st (95wrx) box.

its torque that seems to kill the box in most cases, jap gearbox's seem to last longer than uk ones, not sure why.

it my have something to do with the jap ones having shorter ratios

Jonny,
How many miles has your box covered ? I am quite sympathetic but it has 105,000 miles under it's belt now

IIRC its 3rd that ***** itself first on a UK car?

I *THINK* I'm upwards of 300/300 but I run an RA box anyway - I'm led to believe the casing is stronger?

just dont **** it on a regular basis.. nah... **** that
.. just dont try to beat the synchro

i'm also over 300/300 and using a 'race' organic clutch (lateral Perf' sourced) and no probs on my UK MY00 (so far )
I have had the uprated power about 6 months, and the uprated clutch about 3 months now and done plenty of hooning about.. if you change hard and short (ie: slam it into gear with minimal clutch travel) then what can you say?

BANG

??

What is thought to be safe for Jap WRX classic 'box then ? Most motors JDM are 260 / 280 bhp + from the box. Must be a good safety factor in those.

Uk boxes, aimed at 208 bhp cars .. money saving lesser strength ?

Dean- my box has covered 60k, only 8k at 419.
i think 8k is good on a standard box as i was expecting it to explode straight away with the torque i am putting through it (370 ft/lbs!)

if/when it does go i think i will be putting in a sti v5/v6 box as they seem to hold up very well.

A couple of years ago, I knew a few guys running 300+bhp and around 300lbft in their UK cars.

After the big turbos and ECU's the biggest impact was on the clutch, mine start juddering and the other guys replaced theirs.

Soon after uprating their clutches, the gearboxes lunched themselves. And I think Mr Askew is right, on two of the cars I know of it was third that gave up the ghost.

IIRC once the gearbox is uprated, it's the diffs that won't be able to cope.

I guess it's a case of strengthening weakness just highlights other weaknesses.

Interesting debate this. For one thing, relying on the syncros when you're hooning is going to knacker them. Either get your ECU to set the revs for good changes, or learn to set them yourself. Also, a nice progressive torque curve, and lower rpms is going to ensure longevity as it stresses the components somewhat less.

Johnny gav is on a wrx box i think

My wrx box was fine, it was only first gear that was a bit whining but that was due to using launch control to often

As Johnny says, its the torque that will kill it. Wait for it to go, then get a sti5/6 gearbox

Peanuts-running around 300bhp with standard UK97 gearbox (79k). Clutch started slipping pretty much straight away so I had to go for AP and gearbox showing slight indication of problems.

Don't think I'm heading for any kind of failure but its in with Jap Innovations next week to identify the problem.
