Is the battery on a 99 sti import the same as a uk one?

Not a direct answer, but my 97 Stiv3 import had a Jap battery which was done-for when it arrived. We changed it for a heavy duty Ford battery that fills the space available. The terminals are the same and reach easy. I was told this would improve cranking speed as this can be quite slow on an Impreza.
