Default Crankshaft Oil Seal gone at 26K???

Hiya lads, just looking for a bit of advise..

MY00 Turbo with full decat with the above mileage and the crankshaft oil seal needs to be replaced. Its not leaking much but I am a bit concerned.

Im getting a bit paronoid about how genuine the mileage is as I am surprised it has gone. I bought the car with 21k on it and a FSSH. The car is immaculate and pedals/steering wheel/seats have no wear and like new and the car drives very well but you see where Im coming from.

Do these go or should I be concerned. Honest opinions welcome..

Thanks,
John.

I assume you are talking about the front one?

Mine went at 102,000miles (front crank seal) and was told by a specialist that they SHOULD be replaced routinely with the 90k Cambelt change.

I changed the rear one with the clutch at 124,000miles as a routine item but it was not leaking.. I just changed the cambelt now at 149,000miles and a camseal was leaking. Which is the same as the crank seals only smaller.. I just replaced the one and left the other three and the crank seal looked perfect with 45,000miles on it.

Could have been fitted wrongly in the first place but a little unlikely.. possible it is a faulty seal and nothing sinister though.

Watch the dealer does not try and charge you lots.. it is a cambelt change + a £12 seal.. not a 45k service plus a seal!

Thanks for your reply and yes you are correct saying it is the front one. I presume the seal would be under a good bit of pressure and that is what makes them go in the end but could there be any other reason ie... heat from a downpipe etc??

not heat from a downpipe the seals are away from anything like that.

You could clearly see from my camseal that it had done square.. the lip was no longer pushing outwards to stop the oil leaking out.. presume the fail due to heat and the rubber just perishes.

Here is a picture of my rear crank seal before it was changed.. it is between crank and block and a brown colour

Unfortunalty I don't have a very good picture of the front seal.. but the crank cog is the one with the bolt in the front of it in the middle

Seal is behind the cog..

It might just be the age.. your car is 4years old now and possibly built it 99 so might be 5years old.. mine went at 6years.. not a great deal in it..

And yes it is under pressure

Thanks Simon,

As far as I know the seal on mine seemed like it was kinked or out of position..I'm not 100% sure of this and I could possible be making no sense...is this the way they go refering to your seal going square?

Hi m8, just changed cambelt and front crankshaft oil seal on my legacy gtb twin turbo at 70,000 miles. The oil seals can tend to go "hard" instead of being slightly soft this happens when they get old. When you change the oil seal which is mounted in the oil pump assy i recommend that you remove the complete oil pump assy and check all the screws in the back of the oil pump they are prone to coming loose and when this happens it can let too much oil into the oil pump and cause premature failure of the oil seal.I was not looking forward to doing this job but once the radiator and everything is out of the way it was not too bad to do. Good luck...

Hi there mate
Ive now got exactly the same problem with my99 turbo - front crank seal.
After about 20 mins of driving the oil starts to drop on to the exhaust and the smoke starts coming through the scoop.
while im having the crank seal done i will do the cam seals and belt aswell.
By the way, mine has done 65k with fssh and full decat.
