Question IHI VF 28 Turbo, any good???!!!

Hi guys,

Can anyone help me?? I have a "w reg" Turbo 2000, its completely standard apart from a de-cat stainless exhaust from turbo back, induction kit and dump valve. I have recently purchased a second hand turbo, which I am told was fitted to a P1. The model is a IHI VF28. I have looked at my turbo on my impreza, but without taking it off, I cant see what model it is. I dont think its made by IHI!

Basically, can anybody tell me if I will get anywhere, performance wise, by fitting this IHI VF28?? Sorry for the small amount of info about my car, Im hoping you guys know a bit more than me about my car!!

If anyone can help, that would be great!

Thanks for looking and best regards,

Adam.

If its a std uk turbo, then it will be an IMI ( i think) but almost certainly a td04

Ive just purchased a VF24 to go on my UK W reg turbo

I believe the VF series are much better midrange, and are bearing turbos too

A VF28 was standard fitment on my STi 6 Wagon and with lots of supporting mods including porting the turbo exhaust inlet I got 372 bhp on the rollers at Well Lane. I don`t think there was much more to come out of the turbo and on the next visit to Well Lane with the Ion P450 turbo I got 417 bhp.
I would think that in power terms the results from the VF28 will be similar to those from a well sorted TD05.
You need to determine what turbo is on your car at present and then an educated guess can be made as to any performance differences.

This turbo should have been nice and cheap as they were standard fit on the sti5/6/p1....... and most were sold for £250 or less..... you can get them on ebay for about £100

They will certainly give you more power than a td04..... how much depends on whose rollers you go on....... As Harvey says cant see that they will be that different to say a td05 - maybe spool up a tad quicker?

The vf28 spools up very well but as its got a small compressor wheel peak power is limited - depends what your ultimately after..........

I have a VF28 in the garage waiting to go on my MY00 UK. Just can't be arsed to fit it at the moment....

Apparently they run fine with just a boost controller, but will obviously be even better with a full remap.

So is this turbo just a straight swap for a TD04? I've got an MY00 which is de-catted and ECUTEK'd to 270ish. I'm only really looking for a "reliable" 300 bhp or at least something close to that so perhaps a VF28 would be a safe option with no significant increase in lag?

Sorry to thread-jack.

Ta.

Eddscott...tis indeed a straight swap. Should have no worries at all.
Fit it, nice remap, and off you go.

Whilst we`re on the note of buying turbos from the States.
I bought my VF30, brand new, from Rallispec in the US.
Cost me $700 including shipping & duty.

Doesnt exactly break the bank to get a brand new turbo.

The VF28 is a cracking turbo. Personaly I'd rather keep mine than give it away for £200. At the end of the day when you need one you cant find one or have to pay the proper second hand price, which I see as being circa £400. Based on the price of a new TD04 it's very cheep for a far superior piece of kit.

Sold my VF28 3 years ago (it had done 10k miles) and the going rate was £250.... yes you can get more... but depends how many Monkeys there are out there

You can pick them up in the States brand new for about £400-£450....... but to save money ideally you could do with transporting it back yourself................
