Default 3rd Gear Noise

MY00 - just having a steady drive home, and with no warnings, in 3rd gear very nasty noise, other gears are fine ( maybe very slight noise in 4th ). Selects gears ok, no noise with clutch in.

Car has been running a VF23 for 40k miles ~300bhp, with trackday use.

Am I right to assume gearbox needs attention?

What's the likely parts/costs to get me going again.

What other gearbox options do I have and costs, as happy to consider upgrading.

sorry if youve tried this but have you tried slightly over filling the gear-oil?
this helped a treat on a notchy and noisy gear change on my 99 car.

Thanks for your thoughts, sadly this is the sort of noise that sounds expensive.

there is a washer on third gear to stop the synchro hub sliding over it to far, some times when they done a few thousand miles the washer eventually bends due to heat and a lot of gear changes it gets caught in the teeth of the lay shaft and gets chewed up. this leads to lumps of metat swirling around in the oil until it either gets caught by the magnet or crushed between gears leading to a very expensive rebuild.

Gulp, where did you get yours re-built, and care to say how much it cost ( perhaps PM me if you don't want costs in the public forum

Sounds spot on for what might have happened.

Waiting on quotes from a couple of places for rebuilds / exchange unit / new box.
