Hi all,

Just finished installing an Air Temp Sensor to my scoob and thought id do a bit of maintainance while I had everything apart but found something a bit disturbing

I removed this .. http://www.devilmaycry.me.uk/scooby/...ensor_pic1.jpg .. and found that it is completely covered in carbon/soot/dirt .. shown here (sorry about it being a bit blurred) ..

Can someone tell me what sensor it is? (is it the maf sensor?) and also is the dirt build-up normal?

The car (MY99 N/A) is just coming up to 60k miles, running stock Air Intake with a Air Filter change about 12 months ago.

Not really wanting to leave it like this, is it wise to clean it and the chamber with wd-40 and a cloth? .. or is it best to get it replaced??

that first pic is the stepper motor. mine was filthy aswell gunked up with oily carbon deposits

 

i just sprayed mine with carb cleaneruntil it was shiny again

 

k thanks .. is it something to be worried about? and what does it do?

car is running fine though, but i'd prefer to tackle these things before a problem starts

 

something to do with the throttle control - but im not too sure. A fellow sc netter advised me to clean it as the car had a u/s MAF at one point

 

I think these engines are quite sooty anyway - well looking at my exhaust end pipe its black

 

I can understand parts of the engine being sooty but only those leaving the engine not going into the engine (air intake). What worries me is if there is this much build up at this sensor whats it going to be like at the MAF?

It's probably from the Crank. All the oil mist (and some carbon) gets sucked up from the crankcase pipe during boost. It's normal to find a layer of oil around the inlet...best get an oil catch tank - mine is now very clean.

 

thanks .. catch can is in the pipeline

so nothing to worry about then .. i'll probably give it a god clean when I get the catch can installed and then check it out during the next service.
