Default Put 4L of Syntrax in UK 'box but its over the F mark?

I've just changed the gearbox oil on my MY00 UK Impreza and put 4L in but its a fair way over the F mark on the dipstick? I take it you are supposed to push it all the way in to get a correct reading? Its a good 2 or 3cm over the F mark when the dip is all the way in.

I've tried to measure the amount of oil that came out and its about 3.5L.

Too worried to use the car so just left it in the garage.

Please help, gonna be a pain getting it all back out again tomorrow

At least there were no large filings on the drain plug tho!

Do not worry. I have done the same DELIBERATELY to get the oil over 3rd gear better. Many here do the same.
It will be ok.
Good oil to use too.

Agree with 911,i put 4 litres in my MY01 and it was instantly better after the oil change, again is used syntrax.

I changed mine when the car was 12 months old and it felt better than when it was new.

Thing is after the 4 litres its about at least 3cm past the full hole. Checked it again this morning and its still seems too high to me.

Thanks for the response but I'm going to drain the oil again and re-fill to about 3 litres and then keep filling until its inline with the F rather than the F hole. I know a bit more is better for 3rd but I don't think its safe being so overfilled.

Don't over fill past the slotted plastic bit on the dipstick - this is the breather gap. If you do then the gbox will "breath" though various seals

Now that is a good tip from Nick!
Do what will give you peace of mind. When I refilled mine, I revolved the gears during the age it takes to fill, so getting lots of oil in the gears/synchros etc. I've always done this on gearboxes since I was a lad....for my own peace of mind!

Standard fill limit is 3.1 litres, so if you don't want to overfill put that amount in! However if you want to be on the safe side then use a bit more to protect better,I personally would put more in because it won't do any harm!

I put 4.1 litres in mine

in the centre casing of the gearbox there is a channel that feeds oil through the centre of the top shaft, there should be no need to overfill it really.

I've found the g/box dipstick reading to be VERY slope sensitive. Your car MUST be on perfectly level ground.
(Don't apply the "overfill" concept to the engine though!)

Car is completely level. I ended up with about 3.7 ish in the gearbox and it came to level with the horizontal lines of the F.

As for the engine I thought it was 4.5L but I've put 4.8L and its still not quite at the F mark.

Had a good run yesterday and all the whirly bits are still where there should be so I think its OK.
