Default Poll: Clio cup 172 or standard uk turbo straight line speed

This one seems to be quite puzzling, out of people who've driven them both there is a mixed opinion about which is faster in a straight line.

When driving the clio, I found it to be not even nearly as quick, in any gear throught the entire rev range.

Others say, 'like it or not the clio is quicker'

So let's see out of people who've driven them both how do you compare them in straight line speed.

I compared a my99 uk classic (215 bhp) against a 172 clio cup.

Can we try and keep this to straight line only please.....

Or should I put in a 'I've never driven in a straight line, only wet twisties and then......' section

Scoob everytime. I regularly blow the cobwebs out of the missus's 52plate Clio172 (not cup) and there's absolutely nothing to compare her shopping car to mine in a straightline or on the twisties. Might be due to me having a TypeR that's a lot closer to 272, rather than 172, though.

A Uk turbo is faster - I still say a Clio is faster than a UK WRX.

have to disagree, i've never done the test but after I had my uk classic decatted and remapped the clio was only 10 car lengths behind up to 100, the car was MUCH MUCH slower when it was standard so i reckon the clio would have beaten me had i not been modded.

It may just be me but I recall that when my car was standard i was getting munched on by a load of cars I epxected to beat, they really are poor standard IMHO

also one thing to consider is whether this is from a standing start as the uk car will put a bit of distance between the clio and itself straight away, but both cars level at 40mph and then going for it i reckon the clio would pull away, the uk car will have 160-170hp at the wheels and the clio will have 150hp (thats a total guess mind you as i dont know what the tranny losses are), in which case given the weight the clio will pull away.

All that said, they're totally different cars and which car is faster shouldnt be a matter of opinion, it should be a matter of fact, I know I've just speculated but there is ONLY one answer to this and that cant be answered without actual timings from both.

this thread will go mad i'm sure so hold tight!

I had an MY00 and now have a clio cup, scooby was quicker in standard form, cup might be able to hold on to the back of a bugeye.

Cup can do 40mpg.........my scoob did 20mpg !

They cant stay with my UK WRX (03)......standing or rolling. Tried it. The bugeyes are a fair bit slower than the 03's though.....as i had experience of that too just last weekend....it left me wondering if the bugeyes had a turbo in them at all!

Oh and in terms of top end....well the choice if fairly obvious. 138 Clio, 144 UK WRX (mine anyway...) still stupidly fast in a car that size!!!!!

From a standing start then a scooby everytime but once rolling there is nothing in it. Driven both. The scooby just feels quicker because the power is delivered in typical turbo style.

Interesting so why is the classic quicker than the bugeye?
Classic has 215bhp in standard trim so what does the bugeye have?

UK Classic i think is 150kg lighter than the bugeye and the 03. 1235kg to 1385kg if my memory serves me. Significant difference as a result! The 03 however is supposed to have 222bhp as standard.

Surely there's **** all difference on the road between a standard 01/02 bugeye and 03 blobeye?

People make too much of the extra weight bugeyes carry. I've kept up with classics in mine of a similar state of tune no problem. Around a track there will be a larger difference but on the road where most people use them there's sod all.

All IMHO of course

Chris

more or less your right chris, although the 03's, and i quote from a technician "drive like a PPPd 01/02", and from what i experienced last weekend i would agree....as would the owner of the bugeye. The power delivery is very different from the 01/02 to the 03. Try it. The 01/02 is by no means a slow car at all, but the way it delivers it power is more at the top end, the 03 starts to get going a little lower down (torque). The bugeye that i drove was decatted as well, and it still felt a little sluggish, but as i said.....its the power delivery, as im sure i was still going just as fast!!!

Neil.

Not wanting to upset anyone too much but I've 'raced' a couple of bugeyes now in my import '95 WRX and they were well beaten. By that I mean blown into the weeds. I've also had a crack at a Clio Cup, I actually let off the throttle to let him catch up a bit, till he drew level then floored it again, just to let him know who's boss

Me: 03WRX ppp (and former standard 172 owner)
The missus: 2000 172 Clio (not the cup)

I dont know whether its the torque of the turbo delivery but I was massively dissapointed when i got into the missus's car after having had one before the scoob.

I still drive it regularly and its a great car but if its a choice between taking hers or mine I always want to drive mine. And i really used to love my clio.

even after about 80mph, I would still say the scoob feels like it pulls stronger than the clio.

as for off the line then again the scoob is in a different league due to AWD and its almost impossible to get of the mark quickly in the Clio without spinning the front wheels.

Don't know if this helps but I've got a de-catted ECUTEK MY00 and I well and truly trounced some sort of hot clio a few weeks ago. Boy caught me minding my own and screamed past much to the mirth of him and his mate.

Soon kicked them nicely and squarely on a dual carriageway. Also as an aside this morning I got cut up by an Astra Turbo who decided it wanted a race and along another dual carriageway I was backing off when the Astra was at full chat to allow it to overtake slower cars on the left. Back on power I pulled it in fairly easily.

Maybe the midrange of the turbo makes it feel that much quicker, well makes it that much quicker, but I felt in all the clio took a long time to get through the gears and felt like it was always just about to come into the power band, it builds and builds..... then you hit the rev limiter and it just never did what was expected.

I wasn't really talking about off the line, since 4wd is going to win every time.

Interesting... Seems the WRX slowwwwwsss down and loses to most of the cars on that simulator. What happens half way down the track? Too much weight?

LOL

How much fun is that link ?

I have an MY03 WRX & I quite often race my mate in his 172 Cup down a great bit of straight road, and I thrash him evey time, from a start or rolling, "don't make no difference !!!!"

My Cup (since sold) was all over the back of my work colleague's bug eye wrx like a Russian suit in a race through the lanes in Essex last Autumn. He was gutted.

What - no modded STi5's on that link!! Good bit of fun that

Oh well, just have to go to Pod and do it for real (again!!) - hope there's a Clio pull up alongside me there (or on the way down, or anywhere come to think of it - he'd get a lovely view of my exhaust, but not for long )

Question

I had a fiesta Xr2i behind me from Ascot to Windsor early this morning. Clear road, NSL. Couldn't shake him, even through the twisties.

Oh, I was doing 45 because I was knackered and didn't want to drive off the road. What does that prove? Nothing? Exactly.
