Hello Everyone!!!!!!!!
I got my 1st ever Scooby 1 week ago, my04 STI and I've done 1000+miles
What a car, it's very impressive, the acceleration is amazing but I don't like having to wait till 4000rpm to get the boost.
So I've fitted an K&N Filter and today I orderd a new Exhaust, decat front downpipe, Magnex or Afterburner Vortex mid and back box (not sure which one??).
I'm leaving the middle section with the small cat in because I've heard that if you take the middle away it mucks up a sensor, which causes a light to flash on the dash.
I am hoping the new exhaust will drop the lag and boost down a few revs,
however I don't think it'll be long before I get the ecu remapped.
Does anyone know if you can get a grill to cover the sti intercooler?? as I've noticed a couple of the fins are slightly damaged
and that's only 1000miles!!!
The handling is great (needs lowered) and the brakes are superb,
fuel consumption is cr&p though

A double welcome to someone who knows what "number" his STi is! 
As for mods, whew, talk about running before you're walking!
Why buy a UK car if you're going to zoink the warranty with a load of mods straight away? Japanese import would have been the way to go there.
Anyway, think you might find that removing the downpipe cat will eventually cause the "cat inefficiency" error and have the check engine light coming on, even if you leave the centre cat in. External CEL fix will be needed in that case.
Grilles/covers/protectors for the intercooler are available, but unfortunately most of them reduce the airflow through the IC to some degree or other, so aren't the best bet.
You should be able to straighten the fins fairly easily with a cocktail stick, pair of flat bladed tweezers or similar. Might also be worth checking that the rubber boot that seals the bonnet scoop to the intercooler isn't touching the fins. Trim it a tiny bit if necessary.

Thanks for the advice on the IC. I thought a grill might reduce airflow but was worried about the fins, great thought on straightening the fins.

Incidentally, more fun isn't necessarily caused by more power. I'd argue that a day's performance driving tuition on a track would add waaay more fun than another 30bhp!

Correct me if im wrong Greasemonkey but a remap will fix the cel problem associated with a full de cat??
Oh and could you tell me if a classic scooby has a catted up pipe as i was having this debate with anothewr member who reckoned his RB5 had a catted up pipe

Try a panel filter, the sti one is much better than what you have fitted (ie it doesnt take the air from inside the engine bay
