Question Grinding noise on left-handers? Dealer baffled

On fairly hard left-hand turns, there's a grinding noise from the driver's-side wheel. You can hear it clearly (though it does sound a bit like tyre roar) and feel it through the accellerator pedal.

Local dealer had a good look at it today. Had the car on the ramp, spun the wheels, gave it a full going over. Nothing. Went for a drive, but the traffic was too heavy and inconclusive.

Just been out with a mate on the back roads, and it's groaning away like buggery but goes away when the transmission is not under load. At speed, it also does it in mild left-hand bends, with only an eighth of turn of lock.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Richard.

I'm 99,9% sure this is caused by a defective wheel bearing. Replace ASAP, or you'll ruin the hub as well. BTDT...

Thanks H, but that doesn't explain why the noise goes away when you lift off mid-corner and unload the transmission. Or does it?

I have to admit my first thought it was bearings as the cv joints make a distinctive clicking or knocking noise. Could it be something in the diff?

if you lift off mid corner, you move the weight distribution , and remove the load on the transmission....

it could possibly be g/box related....

is it a grating noise..... if so... daft as it may seem check your pads,,,,

some manufacturers use an audible warning to signify pad wear....honda step forward!!!! and rover too!!!

Had the same thing on Right handers. The boot on the drivers side front CV joint had split & chucked all the grease out . Got it replaced & re-packed with grease and it stopped. If it's the same thing I'd get it checked asap or the cv joint could get buggered.

Try braking gently when the noise occurs to eliminate brake problems. Had a similar noise on right handers, turned out to be the front inside pad jammed in the caliper.

Thanks, guys.

This is defo the wheel bearing, and it's getting worse.

Checking carefully over the weekend, the noise doesn't go away if you lift in a corner, it just gets a bit less as the nose is unloaded.

All brake and transmission related stuff has been eliminated, so bearings it must be anyway. Around £200 including fitting etc. Bu99er.
