Yes, they are either 10 or 20% shareholders in Fuji Heavy Industries, forget which number is correct.

I heard they had an alliance and as a result of this, Subaru are building the 92-X, which is an Impreza 5 Door, with a Saab front end. The Steering wheel is an Sti one with a Saab badge

GM bought before 2 years about 30% of Subaru that Nissan previously owned thus they share new WRX Wagon with Saab!

Why the frown? The 9-2X project represents valuable additional income for FHI, which will, in the longer run, make forthcoming Subarus better cars. Same goes for General Motors' involvement, which has given FHI better bargaining power with component suppliers, as well as access to GM's styling studio and production line technology.

While it's a romantic notion to think of Subaru as a truly independent marque, it is a reality of the modern car industry that alliances with the conglomerates offer considerable advantages. Do you think Mazda would be making cars as good as the 6 and RX-8 without Ford's development money, design/production imperatives and (especially in the case of the 6) access to Ford's platform and componentry?

I also believe Subaru/FHI have ties with Nissan, certainly my old MY98 had Nissan stamped on the electric window switches. (As far as I can remember!)

Ahh didnt know Greasemonkey had such a big stake in Subaru, that explains the wealth of information he has

GM bought before 2 years about 30% of Subaru

Erm, no ScoobyTal. Your Impreza is an Impreza (although it has a load of bits on it that have been used on a variety of Nissans in the past). However, your Traviq (if you have one) is a Zafira, and your Pleb, or Pleo, or WTF is called, is, IIRC, based on the Agila floorpan.

Lol @ Sonic, was waiting for that one.

If it helps keep costs sensible, then its all a good thing IHMO, didnt/dont certain Exotic cars use parts from Escorts and the like, to save on development costs etc (thinking indicator lenses etc, IIRC)

Edited to add, the current pads I have on my car, are actually badged (well the box is) Nissan 200SX, I questioned them at the time, but was told no its ok, now I know why

D'oh. Missed this bit.

According to Brian Long's book, Nissan and Subaru signed a co-operation deal in 1966 and then GM brought their initial 20% stake in Dec 1999 with the Nissan deal concluding shortly after that.
