Default VF24 limits

did a search but couldnt find what i was looking for

ive read a bit about the VF24`s limits and i was given a PSI figure, from memory it was about 17/18 psi (i have this written down sumwhere)

is this the max that the turbo will flow @ full RPM? or is this the max that it should be spun at?

my car came with a vf22 which died, and i have been useing a td04 as a stop gap, but have just purchased a low mileage vf24 to replace it with

i belive the vf22 is the biggest in flow terms of the bunch, how does the vf24 fair?

Small 16G 505 CFM at 14.7 PSI
PE 1820 510 CFM at 14.7 PSI
Large 16G 550 CFM at 14.7 PSI
SR 40 595 CFM at 14.7 PSI
18G 600 CFM at 14.7 PSI
20G 650 CFM at 14.7 PSI
SR 50 710 CFM at 14.7 PSI
GT-30 725 CFM at 14.7 PSI
60-1 725 CFM at 14.7 PSI

T72 920 CFM at 14.7 PSI

IHI VF 24 388 CFM at 18 PSI
T3 60 trim 410 CFM at 20 PSI
IHI VF-22 460 CFM at 18.0 PSI
AVO 320HP 465 CFM at 17.5 PSI
T04E 40 trim 465 CFM at 22 PSI
Large 16G 470 CFM at 22 PSI
SR 30 490 CFM at 22 PSI
Small 16G 490 CFM at 22 PSI
AVO 400HP 580 CFM at 17.5 PSI
PE 1820 580 CFM at 22 PSI
AVO 450HP 650 CFM at 20.0 PSI
AVO 500HP 725 CFM at 23.0 PSI
SR 50 770 CFM at 22 PSI
GT-30 790 CFM at 22 PSI
60-1 800 CFM at 22 PSI
GT-35R 880 CFM at 22 PSI
T72 1000 CFM at 22 PSI

Whether the VF24 will hold 17/18psig of boost at high RPM will depend on the Turbos CFM and how much air the engine will consume at high RPM

Cheers

You could use the turbine housing, which would effectively turn your VF24 into a VF23, would be more laggy but hold boost at the topend better.

I have a VF24 fitted to my MY98 UK turbo

I am running 311BHP and 298LBF at 1.3BAR peak

It spools up slightly later than a TD04 but boy does it go and keep going well after the TD04 has run out of puff.

Power Graph

Cheers

The only reasons I used a VF24 was because a mate of mine was upgrading his STi4 and was selling his 35kmiles VF24 turbo to me for £150 , there was very little lag and it would get me to my desired 300BHP without 2 much trouble.

At the end of the dar go for

1. Reliability

All Sti turbos will take you over 300BHP, its how far over you intend to go ! On my 60Kmile UK MY98 I looked at what might go bang if I was to incease the power. The transmission is the known weak area over 300BHP and therefore I replaced the clutch and flywheel to reduce slip. 1k miles after the remap 4 gearbox bearings went t1ts up. Might of been coincidence or just wear and tear brought on by the extra performance. At the end of the day the STi box bearings are the same as a UK spec so I am hoping it was a coincidence.

2. Price.

Also its not just the price of the turbo you are looking at consider my mods

Uprated Fuel regulator and pump £210
440cc injectors £swaped for a rear spoiler
AP clutch and lightened flywheel £700
Phase 2 Remap £560
Gearbox rebuild £425 plus oil and fitting
Fitting £mates rates

It all adds up even with my discounted and GB rates

3. Driveability

A TD05 will be great for all out power but is very slow to pick up as it begins to pull later than a TD04. Great on the track or down the Pod but not so good for eveyday driving !

Just some advice from my experience

Cheers

Neal

I had in my MY00 1bar boost at 2600 rpms with VF29 and full decat + remap from John Banks so the VF24 is a very good turbo (it's the same with VF29) if you look for torque low down /driveability, I wouldn't touch a VF22 if you use your car every day and not only for track days, too much lag or better ..very late spool up! Just my opinion.

yeah but this turbo is actualy smaller then the standerd version for my car, and it came with the 440 injectors and such as standerd, so it cuts a massive chunk of the cost out

my turbo has approx 16 000 miles and was £102

editited to add, i got my turbine and compresor covers mixed up and i can now see that i can infact make it into a vf23 with parts i allready have

arghh, what to do

Make up a VF23 - you know it makes sense - Only a couple of hundred rpm increase in lag from what I read (2900 vs 3100 on boost) source http://www.scoobytuner.com/tuning/?tuningID=43 but 3 psi advantage in terms of max workable boost which ultimately gives that greater tuning potential at a very small cost

I'm running a 23 and really the lag aint so bad.

i think imgonna make a 23

after all, itis still going to spool faster then the 22 i originaly had fitted isnt it, and the lag never really botherd me with the 22 (until i fitted a td04 lol)

23 it is then

ok i swapped the houseings over and have just finnished installing the turbo.

it doesnt start pulling untill about 3500, but once it does it really shifts towards the redline, i changed up at 6k as i was doing with the td04, i cant rember the vf22 but it was probably about 6500

anyway, i retried it and it just pulled really strong to 7000 where i backed off, i couldnt see the boost display properlly due to the sun and that the roads were to busy but it was 1.2sumthing bar peak

i will report back when the roads are dead and its not so sunny
