Goodwood Festival of Speed
Hi All
I went yesterday, it was absolutely fantastic! apart from the fact that something was obviously wrong with the Subaru WRC, it went down to the start line and then back up to the pits very slowly.
I ventured over to their stand and was confronted by about 6 mechanics standing aroung wondering what to do.
It was a gearbox problem ( a pump or something) anyway it would appear that they borrowed a jack from the Skoda guys, and tools oh and some of their mechanics aswell.
What a sham. No jack or spanners! they had an entire gearbox as a spare but no way to fit it.
I don't believe it!!!!!!
I hope it was running ok today (sat)

Hi All,
I've just returned from the Goodwood festival of speed, which I was visiting for the first time.
What a superb event!. The organisation was fantastic, and guests were well catered for in terms of the facilities - It really demonstrates what terrible value for money a day out at a Grand Prix is these days. On-site catering is very good, and also reasonably priced in comparison to the rubbish at most public events.
The collection of cars running on the day was quite incredible, with most major motorsport categories well represented. There were even three Chrysler gas turbine-powered concept cars from the 1950s running up the hill!.
We also saw Richard Burns performing impresive donuts in his Impreza WRX. He later commented in an interview that out of all of the promotional events where he appears, Goodwood is the only occasion he would choose to be at as a paying customer. There was a simply astounding variety of classic (and current) F1 cars, rally cars, Le Mans cars, and even some streamlined lake racers from the 1950s running up the hill.
There was also an extremely impressive collection of static displays which included Thrust SSC and Donald Campbell's Bluebird Land Speed record cars.
This will definatly be a permanent fixture in my diary, as it should be for any self-respecting petrol head
.
It should be even better tomorrow, so enjoy it if you have pre-booked tickets.
Cheers,
Alex

Just picked this up the report indicates that the event was cancelled after the tragic accident..Driver killed at festival of speed
A driver has been killed and two people have been injured in an accident at the Goodwood motor racing circuit.
John Dawson-Damer, a relative of the Earl of Portarlington, was taking part in a timed hill climb at the eighth annual Festival of Speed at Goodwood, West Sussex, when the accident happened at around 2.25pm.
Two safety marshals, who were seriously injured, were taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, said Sussex Police.
An investigation is under way into the death of Mr Dawson-Damer, who lived in Sydney, Australia.
Thousands of spectators attended the festival which included a 10-strong field in the hill climb, which is its headline event.
A Goodwood spokesman said: "No other cars were involved. We do not know what caused the accident - that is still being investigated.
"All events on the hill climb were immediately cancelled but it is believed that the schedule for the rest of the festival tomorrow will not be interrupted."
The Earl Of March, the event founder, said: "I am extremely upset by the accident to John. I offer my deepest sympathy to his wife and family."

A great shame about the tragedy, as it otherwise certainly lived upto and exceeded all expectations.Fantastic!
ALEX M just about sums it up perfectly in his post.
Bernie Ecclestone should pay a visit - might give him an idea about how to treat the paying public and give value for money. After all, F1 today will be the history that inspires future Festivals in years to come, but is in danger of being eclipsed.

The event was indeed superb on Saturday.
Jenson Button in the Williams BMW F1 car decided to stop halfway outside the Goodwood house right in front of us at the crossing point (no bales of hay to block the view). Then he proceeded to light up the rear tyres on his getaway leaving tyre tracks for 30 metres. The crowd loved it! What a guy!
Burnsie made a good effort, sliding the WRC a bit and donutting at the end paddock.
It was cool to see the McLaren F1 road car and Merc GTR do their thing too. Plus the Lancia S4 musically whooshed and burped its supercharger-turbocharger combo down at the start line.
Well worth it.
