I noticed that over the past few weeks my car has become more & more dificult to start & also there's some oil dripping somewhere in the engine (can smell it in the cabin & it comes out of the scoop when the engine is hot!). Did a CEL check & got:

11 - Crankshaft position sensor
45 - Pressure sensor (pressure exchange solenoid valve)

Anyone any ideas what these do & if they could have anything to do with the symptoms i've been having?

A fault with the Crank Pos Sensor will make the car difficult to start,the oil leak will be dripping on to the hot exhaust and the oil smoke will be containating the CPS Fix the oil leak and clean/replace the CPS.It should improve the starting

I'd wager the rocker cover gasket for the oil leak

 

Is that an expensive job or can it be a DIY?

I'll get under the car at the weekend and see if I can find out where it's coming from

Steam clean the engine first Let the radiator fans fire twice that will be the car at max temp Should help the spotting process
Rocker cover can be a bit fiddly Ive only done it with the engine out the car

I've never done it but I assume its a bit more fiddly than changing the plugs - a mechanic shouldn't charge over an hours labour IMO

 

Crank position sensor is unlike to be related to the oil leak.

It is on the front of the engine between the pulley belts and is identical to the cam position sensort which is below the oil filler neck (easy to spot the cam and then look for the crank sensor).
They are a magnetic sensor that slowly get less magnetic and struggle to work through the crud that builds up on them and so cleaning it would probably get you our of trouble for a while.

They have a 10mm bolt iirc and three wires coming out.. undo the bolt and they slide up out.. worth cleaning the cam sensor whilst you are at it.. just get some carb, brake cleaner or white spirit or WD40 etc and a rag..

The Pressure sensor is on the drivers side suspesion turret / inner wing.
It is cylindical and plastic and usually brown.
It has a pipe in from the manifold and a pipe out which connects to the map sensor (small matchbox shaped sensor).
It should run with the pressure sensor by passed, manifold striaght to map sensor. So if you have a major problem then by pass it until you can get a replacement perhaps?

No worries, hope it solves it.

The crank sensor will deteriate again later but should run fine if you keep cleaning it.

Confirm it is the problem and replace it at a later date.

Went to Subaru yesterday to get a quote on both parts:

Crank Sensor - £120.00
Pressure Sensor - £320.00

Went to get back in my car & the damn thing wouldn't start....again!! They chucked a new crank sensor in (no labour charge) and it started like a dream.

The problems with the pressure sensor are noticable in my car as I currently run 1.1bar of boost and every so often it cuts to 0.7bar for a while. Gotta get this sorted at some point as it's highly embarassing when I want to demolish another car & the boost drops No way i'm paying Subaru prices!!!

If anyone has one spare or knows somewhere I can get one for cheaper i'd be greatful. The part no. is 22012AA020.

Try cleaning the pressure solenoid and boost control solienoid and all pipe work with brake cleaner in a spray can or carb cleaner in a spray can.
