Default intercooler cores

how can you tell if 1 core is more efficient than another core

im getting a custom made top mount intercooler which is slightly smaller than the APS one. the APS one has about 28 cooling tubes whereas the one im having made is said to have about 20 cooling tubes and wider fins as they say this helps in more efficient cooling.

got a pic of an ARC intercooler and it has about 18 cooling tubes so their theory on the cooling idea seems right.

but does anyone know for sure

Cool

What you have to be careful of is too many tubes, as this can cause a restriction of air flow past the air tubes which abviously does not then cool the engine induction air.
It is often seen better with better air gaps between the tubes, enabling a higher air flow past a smaller number of tubes.

I strongly advice you to look at the internal design of the core.

If you look at a standard core, you'll see that there are fins/turbulators internally.

These are very important, more so on a TMIC, where the tubes are very short.

If the tubes don't have proper internal finning, I wouldn't bother. The air flow will be too high, and it will be less efficient than stock.

Mark.

Agree with what mark says..

just becuase the do cosworths doesnt mean they are used to working with other low powered cars such as scoobs..

Whats an ARC one?

Bar and plate intercoolers are better, but you could be looking at 450 -750 for a core.

I would use a thermocouple in your existing setup and log ambient and charge temp, then do the same for the new one and then you will know whether to pay or not...

you can get it to cool far better but what if it is so restrictive as a result that you end up losing 3psi through the core?

intercoolers are about choosing the best compromise. It is very difficult to achieve the best of all worlds.

well its getting made now, hope to pick it up on friday, they are resizing the original my99 intercooler end tanks to save a few pennies. the core will be 50% bigger than standard but with a better core.

its costing me £425 so i hope its good, it will be a nice shinny silver intercooler

will post some pics when i get made if i can work out how to get on here
