Question Air escaping from the petrol tank

Could be nothing, but i've never noticed it on a car before. When I go to fill up the tank, more often than not when I open the petrol cap there is a "fsssh" noise and air escapes. Is this a problem or is my scooby just ooooold?

Question

I thought it was air being sucked IN as the Scoob uses fuel at such a fast rate, the air can't replace it fast enough??:

BTW: mine has always done it.

Me too, its just the pressure differential caused by the petrol getting sucked out of the tank so damn fast!!!

i'm convinced my turbo blows fuel into the engine and not air!

It is air entering the tank. There is a slight vacumn formed from the fuel leaving. It is a closed system. More prevelant on injection cars than carbs. You are not alone.

You'll notice it is greater the longer you have driven before the fuel station as the tank has not normalised. It is greatest when running from full to empty on the same run and going to a petrol station straight away.

I have trouble with fuel escaping from my fuel tank. Every time I open the cap there's none in there, I've only done 200 miles and it was full last time I looked.

LOL
