Sti's are in a higher state of tune, more powerful and a stronger engine (crank etc) BUT they want running on 100 octane,ie Jap fuel, so in the UK you'll deffo need to run it on Optimax and octane booster. If any mods are done like induction kit, decat, then I think (stand to be corrected) the ecu will need a remap.
Std WRX is plenty quick (ive a '95) but won't be as quick as an Sti of the same era.
For £8k at a guess you might pick up a Wrx, sti possibly or a Ra : these are popular wit hsome people but as they've often got less creature comforts (electric mirrors, air con) other people don't get on with them but they can be the quickest model.

That sort of clears things up, i think i'd be better starting with a WRX as id prob forget to put the octane booster in!

hi mate even the wrx is a jap import so that too will have to be run on optimax and octane booster.all wrx are grey imports from japan so will have to run on 100 ron fuel unless its been remapped for uk fuel.you should take this into consideration mate.if you dont want to keep on putting a bottle of octane booster per tank, then have you considered a uk spec turbo, but admitingly you have less power less comforts like no air con, elec folding mirrors etc

hi it depends on how much you wanna spend the best and most cheapful solution is the scoobyecu supplied by pavlo, david wallis.but there are non available at present they are waiting delivery of new chips, these cost around £100.but you could go for a n ecutek ecu and so on from anywhere from £250-600 onwards.
but dont let this put you off alot of people on here run on optimax and octane booster but the best thing to do is invest in a knocklink to keep an eye on your engine see if it isnt knocking or detting.
go for the jap spec car mate you wont regret i did and by the way im still running mine on optimax and octane boosterand mines a fresh import i imported it myself.go for it mate
