Have been having some strange noises from the rear passenger wheel. And it doesn't seem to be bearings. No movement on the wheel rock test anyway.

I'm trying to remove the rear discs to take a look at the handbrake mechanisms to check all is well. But I can't budge the beggers. I'm pretty sure it's the handbrake that's keeping them in place so I guess I need to disconnect that somehow?!

Cars up on stands at the mo and we are off on a long dirty weekend tomorrow. I need help ASAP.

 

Send ian Godney a mail he has a procedure. Basically wined two bolts into the holes on the disc centre hub whilst tapping the disc centre with a micro adjuster. It worked for me but like i said Ian has the correct procedure.

Spotted the two bolt holes. What's a micro adjuster? BIG HAMMER I guess?

 

Yep ! wind the bolts in and give the disc hub a tap, this usually free's the internal shoes, don't bash it too hard just tap around the hub

 

Thanks it's moving slowly but as is always the case my bolt isn't long enough!!! Will now spend the rest of the day cleaning out the garage to find one or two.

Do you know what happens when I get it off? Can I expect flying barake shoes to take my heed off?

 

Make sure the shoes are loose otherwise it will rip them out and bugger the fixings up , mail me your email address and I will mail you the instruction sheet

Forgot about the adjuster that if you are multi jointed to can spin round to wind the adjuster off.

Think you;ll find this useful - Once the handbrake shoes are adjusted off, you should have no bother - I made a special tool for releasing mine ...

I will give this a go. I have slackened off the handbrake from the console but haven't lossened the adjuster off at the hub.

The various metal pins etc that have now fallen out suggests I have trashed the internals.

Anyone know if these parts are freely available I will et you know what the exact damage is when I eventually get the thing off.

Oh well there goes the dirty weekend, ain't I gonna be popular with Mrs SeepyScoob!!

 

Yep well as I feared it's a right mess inside. I think I basically need a whole new set of internals. Anyone know where I can get these? And any ideas how much?

I've taken the other side apart now and I think once I've got the new bits I'll be able to crib off of that.

What does everyone think of driving the car with only the handbrake on one side?

Dont do it.
It would be dodgy,you would have no hand brake.
(Although it might help to make the earth move, if your in the backseet getting it on)

Both cables atach to the splitter cable(if thats what its called),the first part that ataches to the handbrake leaver with the tensioner adjustment on it.

Try it with the car on axle stands and spin the wheel whilst the handbrake is on.

Legally you'd be stuffed if you had no handbrake - If dij can help you out, I'd take him up on his offer....

Taking the disk off should be easy now you know how, so even if you don't like to use 'used' parts, it could get you by until the new ones arrive - Personally, I wouldn't have an issue with it.

I've put it back together (minus handbrake internals on one side) and have given it a test run. Couldn't find a decent hill but have engaged 1st and tried to drive off with the handbrake on - not with too much gusto. It holds ok.
Local scooby garage have faxed through a tech drawing of how it all goes back together and have detailed part numbers so I only have to order what has been trashed. Oh well ya live and learn.

By the looks of it 1970(same year as you).;-)

I joined around christmas time (2003).

SN+ logo for about a week or so.

 

Don't order the parts from the dealers. I did EXACTLY the same as you and warped the shoes. If I remember correctly the shoes alone are over £50 from the dealer.

I got all my replacement bits from Glenburgie Subaru breakers. Cost me £25 quid for 4 shoes and all the little bits as well.

Used handbrake shoes should be fine - don't exactly see alot of wear.

 

Plus,I have a pair of vented discs aswell as the shoes,springs etc,and yes they dont see much ware under normal circumstances unless you drive with the handbrake up.
