Default Unmodded 98 Classic, exhaust recommendations please....

New to the game, my 98 classic turbo, bar the gold speedlines (already fitted) is totally standard and unmodded.

May put PPP on if I keep more than a year, but for now, 6 months in, am looking at new exhaust. Would prefer relatively subtle, but bit of a splutter I don't mind, but not really into setting car alarms off and melting tarmac outside my house! Yet!

Anybody recommend a suitable system, either backbox or whole thing, that won't cost a fortune but will be an upgrade on the standard without hitting Millenium Falcon standards?

Cheers.....

Also, if anyone knows of anything that I am DEFINETLY missing out on by having it standard, please suggest!

Thanks a lot.

If you want a sensibly noisey without being intrusive system, but also wanting the best out of it, you'd be best to get the downpipe and backbox, but keep the standard centre section, this would also retain a small amount of legality, ie, it's got a cat in it!
Hayward and Scott are the ones to go for in my opinion, the spool up of the turbo is worth the money alone! that and a simple panel filter will put a big grin on yer face!
PPP is a lot of money, and similar gains can be had just as effectively using other methods!

Ron.

ps, I think Scoobyworld do H&S exhaust!

Agree,
Hayward and Scott in Basildon (01268) 727256.
H&S scoobysport is the one for you. Go for a decat D/P and back box.

my choice would be to get a centre deact and backbox, i heard there was a lot of issues if the down pipe was changed ie. overboost

I have gone along the Centre and back box route, very happy with noise, it has the nice Scooby "rumble" but is not offensive or everybody looking at you going down the high St. loud, but if you are giving it some berries it sounds the nuts

I was worried about the downpipe as this can affect sensors and be a bit loud I thought

The downpipe is the most restrictive part - so personally I'd remove that! Hell do the whole thing - it's worth it for an extra 25/30bhp and more torque - it'll give the car a load more driveability!....

Mine's going in next week to have my H&S (lagged) de-cat downpipe & centre section fitted, alongside my existing Magnex back box.

Who cares if it's loud? It's a rally car innit!...

Plus get a Knocklink to monitor your engine - you'd be stupid not too....

Cheers, H&S it is, I'll get them to take me through the options!

To reveal my ignorance in spectacular fashion, I've read Knocklink in several threads last few days, what is it exactly????

I'll avoid the PPP if I can do similar over stages..... Just want the best from the car without bankrupting/embarassing myslef!

Thanks for the feedback.....

Thumbs up

Hi Mate

I have a UK MY98 turbo, it was standard 3 years ago and now is running 311BHP 290LBF

Performance wise

Option 1

Full 3" decat BB, centre and downpipe, Zaust of the Magnex or H&S type (£450)
Green filter with cold air ducting via wing.(£60)
Electronic Boost controller (Blitz etc) (£320)
Boost gauge (£100 including pod)
I saw 262BHP and 240LBF with this set up.
Saw no det with this set up so no need for a Knocklink

Option 2

BB and centre upgrade (Magnex and H&S) (£300)
Green filter with cold air ducting via wing. (£60)
Power Engineering remap (£700)
Good for 270BHP and 270lbf torque

Noise and MOT friendly

Go with Magnex BB and resonated centre (£380)
Green filter with cold air ducting via wing. (£60)
Electronic boost controller if required. (£320)
Boost gauge (£100 including pod)

All prices are rough estimates as new items and will exclude fitting cost

At the end of the day always look for 2nd hand bargins in the for sale section. Waste of time buying new on a MY98 car when there are so many nearly new systems available.

email me if you want more info

Cheers

Neal

Cheers Neal, nice performance figures for the budget.

I'll email you when I've worked out my budget and priorities, if that's cool....

Thanks a lot

The sound and noise level is down to the BB you choose. eg stick a Blitz Nur Spec on and it'll sound mental. Decat the dp and leave the std BB and it won't sound much louder than it is now. It will sound better, though, as you'll love the whistle from the turbo.

For an immediate improvement in sound look out for something like a PPP back box in the For Sale section. This will be cheap, but will be just the job. Then think about that down pipe, as it's well worth doing. Again, for the money you get a lot - lots of nice new sounds and improved drivability as the turbo spins more freely. Of course, you'll have to check with your dealer re the warranty on this.

Almost forgot. A knocklink is a piece of aparatus that helps monitor your engine for det, aka pinking or knock. The hardware consists of a sensor and a display and costs around £160 or less.

Without going in to it in detail, det can lead to engine failure due to excessive heat in the combustion chamber. Bad news, in other words. The knocklink gives you warning of this and allows you the oportunity to get it checked out before major damage is done.

It's all sinking in, thanks. If I decat it I just need to put the cat back on before MOT? Either way my BB is on it's way out so after my service will get new BB and knocklink on.

Cheers

Don't forget an exhaust is not an exhaust unless you can get a fist in the tailpipe... or is that just me..
