Question my dealer is now using GTX magnatec,is it any good?

any answers or thoughts to the above please.

they used to use shell helix which i was quite happy with, but i was wondering on the general thoughts with this stuff.

obviously there's better oil out there, but does the magnatec 'perform and protect' the same as the shell helix? if so, no real problem, but if it's no good can any one recomend a simillar priced (£25 odd from dealer) good choice oil?

cheers.

Depends on your driving style, and what conditions that you use your car.

In terms of what Subaru specify, it does the job. But there is better oil out there. There is also worse oil.

If you do alot of hard or heavy driving, then I wouldn't reccomend it. (I've been meaning to have a word with the castrol rep about this)

There are many alternatives, Castrol RS, Shell Helix Super, mobil 1 15w/50, motul.

you seem quite sure thomo any bad experiences with it?

as for my driving style and use of the car, gets a 15 minute drive to and from work every day and gets a weekly 'blast'. try my best to keep the revs sensible untill it's warmed up though, no fun on the work runs

don't really want to have to drop the oil, it only went in friday! but obviously the cars 'health' is more important than £25odd worth of oil

we have been using it for over 8 yrs now so pretty much since it came out and have never had a problem with it. some of our turbos are over 150,000 miles serviced by us using magnatec and still on original engine parts.
if you got a race engine then you would need a better oil but if it's standard then it will be fine.

cheers scoobyboy, yeah it's pretty standard. full decat and TEK2, it's just that after the TEK2 was put in i'm a bit paranoid about keeping everything as best i can with the engine and the change in oil was just a worry.

in your experience do you recomend something else?

You should not use it with any level/degree of mod, afraid I wouldn't put it in a standard car. It is known to cause some problems by carburising when turbo temps get up. I am sure ther are cars running around that are using it and they have had no issues BUT, its abit like bungee jumping, will the aligator get you next time or not ?

ah, not good then.

going with the majority i think i'll go on the side of caution and get it changed.

has anyone got any phone no.s of places to get an alternative oil please and what is best to get? it seems the shell helix that went in before was ok, so if someone knows where i can get this from that would be appreciated.

cheers

There's a thread on general technical about the best place to get Motul Mv300 oil which Bob Rawle recommended to me. I got mine from Demon Tweeks but I gather Alyn at as performance (asperformance.com) has some in stock.
