Ninja,

Read these threads and then you will be able to decide. It will take long to read but it is very very worthy.

Ninja, great question! With no easy answer

It depends. On your car, driving style, length of journey, ambient temps, colour of socks...

Seriously, there have been massive threads on this one. Try a search. For what it's worth, here's what I recall.

1) Use recommended semi-synthetic until engine is nicely loose. Say 7,500 miles.

2) Then use fully synth. I use Castrol RS 10-60, or Mobil Motorsport 15-50. Silkolene and Redline are also popular, if you can get them.

3) Unless you're a wuss, change the oil every 3-4,000 miles. And if you are a wuss, change the oil every 3-4,000 miles anyway. Those that know say this is the best protection you can possibly give your engine.

4) Change the oil after a track day, without fail.

5) Use a Subaru oil filter. Apparently they're good, and other brands will invalidate warranty.

6) For winter, I'm changing to Mobil M/Sport 5-50 as I too do a lot of short journeys. But if a track day comes up, I'll refill with Castrol 10-60.

7) After a thrash, let the engine idle for at least three minutes. The turbo takes ages to cool safely.

I'm also getting oil temp and pressure gauges.

Cheers,

Richard.

Thumbs up

I have just had my P1 serviced (6 month), 3500 mls. I had the Dealer put Castrol RS 10-60 in, which I supplied (5ltrs, £27). Even the service manager agreed it was good oil
