Driving home Sunday night. Doing about 75mph. Floored it and noticed that the reves got to about 5 1/2k then shot up to about 7k then down to about 6k. it felt as if the car was reving the extra but not pulling anymore.

any clues??

 

You need a new clutch mate.

Good news as always...
Only had a new one complete with flywheel done about 30k ago. What is a good clutch test??

while driving in fourth or fifth put your foot to the floor. If the revs go up without the road speed rising your clutch could need replacing.

30K miles is not to bad for a heavy right footed impreza driver. Just had mine replaced after 58K.

Any other ideas for simple clutch testing.?

 

If you had been slipping the clutch (fast starts, etc) its possible it could of overheated causing it to slip. You would normally get a lovely smell!

Run with it for a little while and if it happens again get the clutch looked at.

 

I've got the same problem, I've had my MY95 3 years now and just about to fit my second clutch, only done a total of 45k since I've had it - too many quick starts

Ok guys,enough of the good news !!!!

Whats that simple cluch test thing???

Try to pull away in third or something?????

 

Handbrake & pulling away in high gear type stuff doesn't always show a dicky clutch -- I've always found the best way (had an XR3 with a leaking oil seal, went through a LOT of clutches) is to find a long hill (like a motorway upgrade) or maybe a flyover, drive up it in 3rd at about 50, then BOOT it hard, don't pussyfoot.

If the clutch is fcuked, the rpm will jump straight away without increasing road speed. If the car accelerates normally, then it should be OK.
