I'm in desperate need of help.

I own a 1997 subaru impreza wrx sti type-r. V4

For ages now, i've had a real weird problem, with the wheels spinning and sort of fighting for grip when pulling off, all the way up to 5-6 mph.

ESPECIALLY when attempting a 180 degree or 360 degree turn...only when going slow, e.g. 1-5 mph.

Above those speeds it's fine.

I took the car to Interpro in Bristol and they noticed the problem and said they needed to replace the gearbox.

They had one there that had only done 15,000 miles and did it at a nice price for me.

Picked up the car today and it's still doing the exact same problem. Wheels spinning and juddering and almost immpossible to do a 360 degree turn.

Now they are saying that they have no idea what it could be.

PLEASE, i'm absolutely desperate...does anyone here have any idea as to what it could be?

ANY help will be soooooo much appreciated, i'm going mad here...sooo frustrating.

Are you sure it's not clutch judder that you're experiencing??

 

DEFINITELY.
Clutch fully let out, try and go around a roundabout and it wheel spins and judders like mad.

Wonder if you have grounds to claim back for the box, as you've replaced a perfectly good gearbox on their say so, any lawyer minded peeps have anything to say on this? Cheers, cal

 

I would have thought you would have some come back here - they got it wrong, go speak to the garage nicely first and suggest it's their problem and see what they say. I would first get an independant written report by another main dealer on the problem - take some leagal advice also.

Eh? Without actually getting into the car and driving it, it is difficult to comment authoritatively, but given your description it sounds extremely unlikely that a damaged or worn gearbox would be responsible.

It does sound a bit like a damaged/worn centre differential, and the centre diff is part of the gearbox casing, in this case they could have replaced the centre diff unit while keeping the rest of your existing gearbox.

Incidentally, did Interpro replace the centre differential when they did the box swap, or did they retain the car's original one?

It could concievably be the centre diff control unit malfunctioning and retaining some charge in the electromagnets. It could be a worn CV joint, a knackered rear diff, or something else altogther.

Given that you've paid for Interpro to fix a problem which they've demonstrably failed to do, and given that even the latest technology doesn't allow us to diagnose your car over the internet, you would be well advised to take the car to a recognised Subaru specialist, say, Powerstation, and get them to diagnose the problem and write a report on whether replacing the gearbox was ever likely to have been the cause. You can then use this to gain redress against Interpro.

BTW, why do you seem to invent a new screen-name every time you turn up here? By my reckoning that's at least four (Scoobytyper269, Scoobymatt26, ScoobyTypeR and MattMR216v). Any I've missed?

Well there's your first mistake. Interpro are useless tw@ts, as anyone in Bristol would tell you.

Take it to Powerstation.

It was scoobytyper...but I lost my password and changed email addy etc...selling the scooby (too costly) so aint been on here for ages ;0)

Interpro, or should that be InterAMATEUR...did give me the money back for the box, but 100% REFUSED to give me the money back for the labour ;0(

I'm not sure what they did with the center diff, but all I know is they ripped out the old gear box and replaced it with theirs...problem still there.

I think i'll have to pay a visit to powerstation.
