just realised that both the inner cv boots are split (and flicked grease over everthing ) on both my legacy's front driveshafts.
its mot is due next week, will it fail with these split boots?

i remember somebody (cant remember who) mentioning that only the outer boots are checked on the mot? i am wondering about this, but my sisters car passed an mot with one split inner boot, although it was just a split.

any advice appreciated

p.s. anyone know how much the boots cost?

 

if there split and grease is been flung everywhere
pretty sure it will fail for that anyway you should replace them so your cv joint dont pack up

The inner boots will be a pass and advise if split/leaking!!
Only the outer ones if split or insecure will fail the MOT.

it wasnt the cost of the boots i was bothered about, its the getting under the car messing around in this weather! lol

the outer boots are fine, and all rear ones too, strange that both front inners have gone as the outers twist around more

If they are leaking/split at all, then they should fail.

Anything that leaks fluids should mean a failure.

You may be an MOT tester, but I have never seen a car with split boots pass an MOT here, unless he has been in a good mood, and simply pointed out that it needed replaced.

 

he's right i'm afraid if the inners are split it should pass as long as the outers are ok.
we dont set the rules only go by them

I agree that any fluid leaks should fail but at the moment they don't except fuel and brake fluid (obviously).

We DO NOT make the rules,we can only go by what the Testers Manual states as the Pass/Fail critera

well bugger me, car has just failed mot on a sidelight bulb and both inner cv boots being split.
i mentioned to him that i was told it was advisory and he said no it was a definate fail.

my sister told me last night that the inner boots on her car are both split and have gone through 2 mots!
told her she may wanna swap em now cos the driveshafts might pack up lol.

anyway, ive ordered the boots, hopefully here today, and will swap them over the weekend.

strange things MOTs my celica failed on the steering rack inner boot and that doesn't even spin round

Ian...i am very surprised yours failed on the inner CV gaiters.I would of gone back and asked the tester where it says in the Testers Manual about driveshaft inner gaiters being split are a failure.
You could appeal BUT it takes time and hassle.(plus you can't fix the car until afterwards!).
Another way is to fix the 'faults',obtain a pass and then inform the tester/garage that you have passed on the info to the local VSOA office for their comments!!

Thanks for your advice, i may just do that and pass on the info to see what happens, purely because its a 30 mile round trip to the mot garage, and theyve failed me on something that isnt technically a fail

When he wrote out the tick sheet, and told me it failed on the inner boots, i said i knew they were split but had been told by an mot tester that they were advisory, he just shook his head and said no its a fail.

Its not like they were trying to get the work either, because he just said to get them done then pop it back for my mot certificate.

I changed the boots today, so will take it back on monday.
