Matt

Is it a '99 or '00 car?

Sounds like the famous clutch/brake pipe vibration - there are three or four pipes run along the bulkhead in the engine bay above the clutch and brake master cylinders, they need a bit of foam rubber stuffed down the back of them to stop them vibrating.

99 with ppp. never heard of that before so hopefully that means (as it costs no money and little time) that my dealer will be willing to do the necessary under warranty. alternatively is it something i can do myself? cheers for the tip anyway.

Thumbs up

matt

If your dealer hasn't been living in a cave they should know about it - "they all do that sir".....

Fixing it yourself is a five minute job anyway - when I say stuff a bit of foam rubber/blutack or similar - anything to stop the vibration - in between the pipes and the bulkhead - it's exactly that!

Time for new thrust bearing by the sounds of it.

Other possiblilties.

pressure plate or flyheel out of balance.

Don't get him paranoid! Trust me, almost certainly the pipe vibration. Symptoms described to a T. Had it on my own '00, as have many others.

Dave,i had a look in the engine bay tonight and the only 3/4 pipes running together that i could see are those of the metallic kind at the top of the bulkhead that run just under the stamped VIN. Are these the ones you mean? They are clamped together by a couple of white clips. if so which part is thrashing against what to make this bloody loud sound. apologies if im on completely the wrong track.
cheers

Matt,

if you are you sure this is not just you slipping the clutch then I would definately say its what people have said. if you look at the engine on the drivers side there are (i think~) 3 brass pipes that go to the brake solenoid. They bend over the right hand side of the engine. Just shove some kind of buffering material between the engine and the pipes. I have a block of rubber wich hasn't melted yet. Seems to not get that hot there.

I went through the same thing and all my advice is just reiterated advice from others who know a lot more about this stuff than me. Did the trick though.

my99.

That's them. They don't rattle against each other, just resonate like a tuning fork when they are vibrated at a certain pitch.
