Can anyone tell me if I should beable to hear the turbo spinning down for about 10secs after turning engine off? I have only just noticed this and am worried it might be the turbo on the way out.

My car is an STI Type R IV and has a VF24 as standard.

I'm fairly sure mine does that. It takes an age to stop ...
UK94 with TD05 I think !

You can hear it scrolling up and down all the time on the lightest of throttles. When the engine is turned off you hear the impellor still turning, even after I've idled it for a couple of mins to cool down.

I cant hear mine/96 STi with Tdo5 i think and thats after the turbo timer has cut out/2 mins later!!!!

CJ change your engine oil and filter see if the noise quietens down

Darren the car has only just been serviced, they changed the oil etc. The strange thing is i have only noticed this since the service.

Dont you let your engine idle for a while (ie the reccommended min that subaru reccommend???!) if you did this i dont think you will hear your turbo running down as its already done it either that or your just hearing the engine cooling fan running???

guys,

with the engine on even at idle, the turbo is still spinning bloody fast by normall spinny things standards. A trubo timer will keep your engine running and hence idle exhaust will still spin turbo.

I think you will find it varies from turbo to turbo. I have just changed mine, I have no recollection of hearing my old one after the car was switched off, but I can definitely hear my new one.

Exactly the same as me - wonder why?

 

Surely at idle the turbo should NOT be spinning or am I missing something? I thought it only started spinning up when it comes on boost (hence the whistle noise when you floor it ) Is it not just the alternator slowing down (I get the same noise from my deisel van & no turbo on that)

I thought that a turbo that constantly spins with the engine on was called a supercharger

The turbo wiil be spinning the whole time the engine is running. It will only produce boost when it is spinning fast enough to force air into the engine over and above the normal suction of the engine. A supercharger does basically the same thing but is driven directly from the crankshaft by belt or gear and not by the force of the exhaust.

My P1 has just started making the very same noise. Sounds like a washing machine slowing down from spin, but very faint.

Strange it has only just started to do it.

Perhaps it is on the way out.

Oh well, more warranty claims !

When its brand new, no sound, as time goes by it will get louder and duration of the spinning sound will be longer, when it gets worst you can even hear it when idling. This happens to all ball bearing turbos after sometime when unavoidable wear and tear on the bearing kicks in, (but nothing wrong with it, so not to worry YET !!) IHI's VF series happens to be a ball bearing type and its the easiest to experience this sound. In comparison between apple to apple, VF's are not really good (maybe the weakest) among all ball bearing turbos if you were to compare to aftermarket bolt on ball bearing brands like Garette, APEXI, Zero sports, Bozz speed, HKS etc.

However, you shouldn't experience the same if you are using non ball bearing TD series.
