Yesterday afternoon a few friends and I installed a full scoobysports De-cat exhaust system. I have heard rave reviews of this system here on this board, and most people really love the sound. I like the rally car wail when i get on the boost, but the noise from take-off is kind of a bit much for me at the moment. My friends and I are thinking that it will quiet as the exhaust packing settles in a bit, and i was wondering if this is the case?

Also we installed a De-cat up-pipe with the system.

The power gains are quite Awesome, but the back box, might be a bit loud for my taste.

All i can say is that it aint going to get any quieter! Like any exhaust its going to take some time to get use to, it is a meaty exhaust note but its one that may get a little tiring on long journeys still its a great exhaust as many people will tell ya

Thats what i was afraid of... At idle its great, but as soon as the motor is under any kind of load, the noise really jumps and i may be just too old for that... I wonder how much it would hurt performance if i put the stock rear center section back on. Anyone got any ideas?

Nathan,

The stock centre section is very restrictive, and you will loose power. As an alternative, find out if you can get an extra silencer put into the centre section.

A "straight through" will reduce noise, but will have little effect on power.

After fitting a lagged downpipe there was a definate increase in noise level, and it seems to get loader the hotter it gets. I`m at the point of considering a quieter backbox, but which one? Answers here please?

It should get slightly noisier or more 'beaty' as the carbon builds up , mine did. Stick with it it sounds great outside the car.

 

Have you lagged the downpipe with heat wrap as this keeps the noise down a bit. I also put dynamat in the boot of my car and don't find the exhaust note intrusive at all (unless you open a window) .

 

I have the up-pipe, down-pipe, and front center section wrapped in heat wrap. I quite like the power gains, but I think the back-box is not for me. I am going to try something else... I am convinced that the power gains are from the removal of the cats, and the increased flow of the system, not so much the effect of the back box.

Any suggestions? Looking for quiet, and something that will bolt up to what I have.

In case it helps anyone, i had the same noise concerns.

To cut a very long story short, i now have;

Lagged Scoobysport downpipe.
Standard WRX/Sti (i.e. uncatted, small silencer) midsection
Scoobysport "quiet" backbox. You have to get the quiet version made specially, as Scoobysport don't often have them in stock, but the difference between this and the standard backbox in terms of noise, compared to the power loss from more baffles (about 5bhp), is well worth it in my opinion.
With this set up, the car gained LOADS of extra midrange, cruises at high revs much more comfortably, and sounds great, without being intrusive.
Trust me - you won't be disappointed.

Scoosysport will make you up a quieter backbox if you want one!!
All they do is put more swabbing in the box when building it !!!!!

Or the other way to go is to get a P1 back box

Personally i'd get some ear plugs and keep the performance, had my full s/sport zaust on now for 3 months on a bug eye and its seems louder now than when first fitted, its really just down to personal taste at the end of the day, i think the scoob should have a lot of grunt and noise and to me thats what the turbos all about at the end of it all you've got to drive the car so its up to you !

 

I just tried out a back box from a company here in the states. It has much of the same sound quality of the scoobysports setup, but not at near the same level of volume when you are at cruise. At WOT, it still screams quite a bit, but the wife likes it better, so thats what is important.

I wish i would have known that scoobysports would make it a bit quieter...

I curently have a Magnex Backbox and centre section with a resonator and gwt frustrated that it's not as loud as a Scoobysport system, although will still give the same performance gians....

Q. Does anyone want to swap their Scoobsport rear box and centre for a Magnex back and centre.....?
