Unhappy

Hopefully someone will know about this.

I have an STi 5 Type R. Nearly two years old now. One thing I have noticed for a while, but never worried me enough to take to a garage is a strange vibration noise that appears sometimes.

It seems the vibration is not there under acceleration, but when I come off the throttle and decelerate through the gears, as the engine noise drops away I can hear a vibration sound.

Probably way off the mark, but it seems like a housing somewhere around the gears or something that needs tightening !!. Anyone had similar experiences ??

Cheers,

Scott.

Scott - I've had this for a week now on my UK MY00. Only happens when lifting off and audiable at lowish revs. Sounds like a dry metalic vibrating noise

Usually hear it when the window is open and where the sound bounces back - eg going through a tunnel or under a bridge.

Could it be a heatsheild, say around the turbo ? They can often work loose.

Just a guess mind.

Thumbs up

Rich,

Spot on. Thats exactly what is sounds like. Not too worrying, but as you said you are driving through a tunnel, loads of noise and then you lift off and get a horrible vibrating noise..... Ruins the growl of the engine...

Ian, would this be something I can check as a non-mechanic, or is it a trip to the dealer ?

Cheers,

Scott.

I had a similar problem, a rattle like a bag of (small!) spanners at a certain revs.It was a heatshield, one of the little ones right underneath the engine. I first heard it when coming off the trottle, but could get it to happen at standstill by holding the revs at around 3k.
These are held on by 3 bolts, but one of the lugs had snapped across the bolt hole. One washer later everything was fine!
How come something so simple can induce engine rebuild type panic attacks?

Hope this helps, and I hope your problem is as simple as mine

Check the a/c pipe between the IC and the firewall...it was so close to the firewall on my scoob that on accel/decel it rubbed against it, causing a very strange sound.

Loosen the mount, pull it away, retighten.

Voila
