They've obviously registered it to get numbers up, however, I have heard of cars that get damaged enroute from the factory (not Subaru) and then get repaired over here by the importer, and are then sold through the dealers, only they're not allowed to sell the as new, if they've had panels replaced they have to be sold as 'used', even with extensive repairs but no new panels they can go out as new, and we the customers would never know!!

Get a lower price, or get it thouroughly checked by a bodyshop man!

Cars are generally pre-registered by dealers to make manufacturers' or importers' targets. Pretty sure the law now says they're not allowed to sell them until they've been registered for three months but I don't think there's anything preventing the dealer from storing it (so, zero miles) and offering it to a buyer as the second owner. Think about it though, new cars attract VAT at 17.5% plus an amount (can't remember what) for first-registration tax. A second-hand car, therefore, (which is what this is) should have these taxes deducted. On a £20k car, this amounts to around £3k so that's the minimum discount I'd be looking for. Bear in mind if you buy it, as soon as you leave the showroom, you can be very sure that the dealer will knock at least that amount off the value of the car if you turned around and tried to trade it in.

It's your money though ...

£500 only off,no way you are the 2nd owner and this will always reflect in YOUR resale value, i would push for 1/2 way and ask for £1500 as £3000 off is the trade in price if you had registered it and didnt drive it.

'Im sure they wouldnt knock off 3K'.....

They would, and did for Zippy, Russ, and myself, or was that a few weeks after we bought them......

Zippy gets discount where ever he goes, he once asked if the displayed price was less if he used cash.

In the local McDonalds.........

I think H7 has got the VAT issue wrong...

sure you pay 17.5% VAT on a new one, but if the dealer registers it he is VAT registered therefore he immediately claims it back, however he then has to charge VAT when its sold... therefore a customer wont be able to argue that into the deal... therefore dont assume a 3k discount.

There are a fair number of pre reg cars around - ring around and get a feeling for the market value... also never forget that what matters is the price to change.

A couple of months back SGT were doing a good deal on brand new cars and in my experience offered a fair px price.

Good luck.

Don't forget that the new for old cover within the first 12 months of most insurance policies requires that you're the FIRST registered owner of a car.

Check with your intended insurer if that aspect is important to you.

mattm,

After thinking about it, I think I probably got it wrong above . Makes sense that VAT is charged even on second-hand goods. I may have been recalling the time when there was a Special Car Tax which was only chargeable on new vehicles. Still think he needs to get more than £500 off the price of a new one

Edited to say: Ahh, just noticed wakeboardar got a deal he liked Have fun with the new car
