Quickshift Help

Just got a GGR Quickshift lever, and am trying to figure out hoe to fit it to a MY96.
I have removed the gear **** and rubber boot, and the stereo facia that goes down and round the gear lever, and removed the bolt holding the lever to the actual shift arm. This leaves me looking down at a rubber boot with a metal surround with at least 6 visible bolts, which would be a barsteward to remove. I have removed a thin metal wire which goes round the outside of the rubber boot (round the lever) but I cannot get the lever to budge.
What do I need to do ???, I see in the instructions to remove a circlip but I can't see one, do I need to remove this whole rubber boot/metal assembly ??
Help !!!!, I can't get home tonight until I fix this !!

I've only done this on newer (MY98 on) cars, but here goes:
If you can see a white nylon ball on the end of the gear stick (probably with quite a bit of grease on it) buried in a socket made of the same nylon material with about 4 small slots where it meets the ball then just PULL!
Or use a slight levering action to get the stick out.
Well that's how I did it and I didn't do any damage.

Nope, I can not see the balljoint, there is a rubber boot over the top of it and the lever sticks through it.
This pic is actually of a MY99, but it looks almost the same as mine. I guess I will have to remove that rubber boot/metal retainer after all.
What a pain that will be cos I have to remove all the facia's as well.

I just had the same problem on an MY97 Forester stb.
The instructions that come with the quick shift say that there is a circlip either around or on bottom of the white nylon cup.
Sods law mine was on the bottom - and I mean right on the bottom.
The only way to release it is get underneath the car. The balljoint is directly above the prop shaft so its a fiddly job. Do it with circlip removers - its too awkward any other way.
Once off, you can pull the white nylon assembly with original shift up through the housing.
Reverse is equally fiddly so be patient.

Once the circlip came off and I looked at the aasembl, ther appeared to be to no reason why a good yank (AndrewC) shouldn't do the job instead.
The instructions that come with the jobbie show a pre 97 and post 97 assembly. Can't see any circlip on the pre 97 pic so perhaps brute force is the answer.
