I'm thinking about changing my MY00 Classic for a 2001 or 2002 Bugeye but am concerned about the change in the driving experience. I've heard that Bugeyes are slower and less involving than Classics - anybody disagree?

I own an Classic MY98 Wagon, and a friend has a Bugeye MY01 Wagon.

Having driven both, and having travelled to Paris with them earlier in the year I can say the following.

My classic feels much quicker, due to the punchier delivery.

Bugeye is quieter and smoother.

Actual on road performance, there is nothing to choose between them.

Basically the bugeye undoubted feels slower than the classic, but this is a function of the smoother power delivery IMO, and in actual fact is equally as quick.

I was also thinking about making this move, as I'm tiring of the internal noise on the classic wagon(with PPP backbox and P1 centre section), the bugeye is much quieter (with scoobysport backbox).

 

Same power 215bhp but the 2001 weighes 150kgs more due to extra strenghtening. If you have a classic its like the difference between you in on your own and you in with 2 other adults.

What about build quality then - is a Bugeye significantly better or is it likely to have just as many rattles as a Classic?

 

I went from a mildly modded UK MY98(eibachs, geometry, drop links) to a slightly more modded MY02(eibachs, geometry, full decat, 6 pots, TEK3)

The bug eye is far superior in every way. performance(never tried a standard bugeye though), handling(far superior), brakes(obviously!), interior, build quality, internal acoustics(far more refined)fuel consumption(220mls V 260mls to a tank).

Personally I would never own another classic. The only way is forward if you ask me.

 

Biggest downside I have seen with the bug eyes is the value of them drops faster than a lead weight!

Seen MY02 and even early MY03 with under 20K on the clock going for less than MY00 with 40K. OK can't compare condition etc, but they do seem to loose value hand over fist.

 

I bought a new age last jan (brand new), I now have a my/00 with full PPP. There is no comparison between the two! PPP aside the new age is quieter, better interior, feels slower!!, and IMHO just not quite on the mark.

It's beginning to look like I would be disappointed in the performance of a bugeye, unless I modify it to bring it up to classic performance.

Maybe I should wait a bit and get a MY03 next year instead!

Mates bug eye has 1 rattle (the clock pod in the dash top) but now resolved by the dealer who said, you just grab it like this - yank, and out it comes, then put a bit of draught excluded here - stick, slap it back in , and voila, done.

My classic aslso has only a single rattle from one of the trims around the top of the door, found a clip had broken, also now fixed.

Although, I do in general have to say, the bugeye has a more quality look to it, altyhough be careful as there are two seat versions, buckets as per the classics (without side air bags), and sports seats, which are wider and contain air bags (this is how you can spot them except for the less support part )

The bugeye is quieter inside coupled with better fuel economy when cruising up/down the motorway, and longer service intervals. PLus I'm happy with standard performance with a nice exhaust note, so major mods are not a priority so I expect I will probably make the move over in the next 12-18 months hopefully, plus black and wr blue are available colours in the bugeye

 

i had 3 classics and bought a bugeye last november at first i thought it was like a slug but everything about the car was better after 2 months i ppp'd and fully decatted it and believe me it had the best of both worlds performance and comfort the classics were not a touch on the bugeye.(after a few mods)

so now i have just ordered a sti type uk not because the bugeye is bad in anyway but i just want to better myself

 

I have recently changed from unmodded MY99 4dr to MY02 Bugeye 5dr PPP.

- The bugeye was at a bargain price (and I got a reasonable trade-in for the classic, 3.5k difference)
- The brakes were a bit better (particularly noticeable at slower speeds)
- The handling is noticeably better, due to bigger wheels as std and stiffer chassis
- The steering is completely different - much lighter when manoeuvring, less "feel", plus took a bit of getting used to when driving fast on bends as (it felt) you don't have to turn the wheel as far!
- The bugeye felt awfully slow in comparison (I test-drove it without PPP). The PPP fixed that, plus it had 95RON in the tank when I picked it up. Performance is much more "Classic" like in delivery now after a few tanks of Optimax. After 6 weeks of ownership nothing else has kept up with it.
- All the little extra gadgets you get and refinement make it much nicer to own and drive each day
- The seats are better quality
- The doors/door mechanism have a quality feel (except when the window is down!)

All in all I'm perfectly happy, but would not have made the move without the PPP.

Power to weight wise an MY00 and MY01 PPP are about they same so on paper an unmodded MY00 will be about as quick as an MY01 with a PPP kit. Mind due an MY00 PPP would give an MY03 STI a seriously hard time power to weight wise .

 

Had a lightly modd'd classic for 4 years, now have modd'd bugeye. 01 WRX is definately the better quality car. (And better performance with a couple of mods !)

 

I'm still on my first scoob (a MY 01 Bugeye) and before i spent my hard earned I drove a classic and a blobeye(these were all standard WRX's BTW).

The classic to me did look a little dated compared to most new "rounder" shaped cars, but I did get the kick in the back response I was looking for and the grin factor was 2nd to non of the others. I wasnt so keen on the Blobeyes as they seemed far too "refined" for the car it was meant to be although still a good amount of grunt per £££, so I cohse the bugeye. You dont get that kick in the back from the turbo...or so it seems.. I think its decieveing though as I think its as quick as the classic if you could just watch the speedo needle go up, but with a smoother ride and less noise I dont think theres much between the two.

Well, what would it take to prise me out of my classic and into the most hideous of all cars, second only to the Ford Scorpio?

Certainly to go from the best Impreza ever made ( The MY00 ) to the worst I would have to be paid quite a lot! My MY00, worth what in PX? £9000? to buy a MY02 ugly?

I guess that if the garage took mine, gave me the ugly AND £10,000 I would consider it ....................... BUT< is it important to me that people point and laugh at you if you are seen in an Ugly?

Each to ther own - IMO - The bugeye is a great choice - Not as UGLY as the BLOB EYE

The Classic shape was good - but a little industrial

Seriously, thanks for all the comments. Trying to take a balanced view, it would appear that it is very much down to personal taste between the two models, although there seems no doubt that a standard bugeye is slower in some respects than a classic. However, perhaps it is worth giving up a couple of tenths in performance for the better quality and increased refinement of a bugeye.

Saw three scoobs lined up next to each other on a dealer forecourt the other week...a classic, a bugeye and a blobeye.
As far as looks is concerned, the Bugeye has matured over the last few years and looks better then the new shape IMO. I used to think the bugeye was really ugly. However, within a few years i'll get used to the new shape blobeye too.
But it has to be said the Classic still looked the best out of all three lined up. It hasn't dated IMO...it's smooth and rounded and delicious!....looks so balanced.

 

So So true how can you argue with this?
