Hi guys. Wonder if any of you can help. Currently havin ahuge debate with a mate about whether the yellow cameras on traffic lights are just there to catch you jumping lights, or can actually detect you speeding. My reckoning is that its just for jumpin lights, please shed some light on this before i bosch him one!!!

As you say they are for jumpers but something I didn't know - which I do now, is that the speed you are doing through the red light will correspond to the severity of the fine/punishment and the proximity of the cars coming form the other direction (now on a green light) at the junction will also be taken into account.

There's been an application to have all lights cameras converted to speed ones as well, but it's not gone through as it's only an application and (hopefully) will get turned down!
Stupid this, will cause more accidents when someone's right up your a$$ and hasn't got good brakes. There'll be plenty more pileup's at the lights from these if they come about!

When one of our work vans got caught by a red light camera a couple of years ago, the NIP was for failure to stop at a red light (or however they phrase it), but it also indicated the speed the driver had gone through at.

The red light cameras do get your speed - BUT I believe they only do this IF you go through a red ... Hmph - someone I know (cough cough ) did this in Clapham and they were sent a photo (after he had asked for one) of the car over the line and a readout of how long after red it had crossed the line and it's speed at the time (about 1.4 secs and 21 mph)....
So i don't think they actually get your speed until you've crossed on red.

PS: just to say I don't condone jumping reds but sometimes you make a miscalculation when it changes to amber as you approach....
