It sounds like the drivetrain to me.
Try and be a bit somother with the upshift - but it's not really anything to worry about - it just won't last very long if you constantly slam every gear change.

Full.

Question

Cheers Fullon

It's wierd, the car has only done 28,000 miles and appears to be in very good condition. Unless it has done 100's of traffic light grand prix starts in downtown Tokyo (the tyres suggest that it hasn't) or where ever it came from, could it really wear out in this short milage?
Could it be anything else?

My friend Chris who owns the car has only had the car 2 weeks and is bricking it as he is worried that it's going to break on him.

I told him to get a Cossie

Question

Hi there all

My friend has just bought a 93MY WRX and occasionally when accelerating hard he upshifts and there is a loud bang from somewhere in the engine compartment. What could be? It only happens when under full load/full throttle, then upshifting conditions. I have a very worried friend who thinks he is about to have a very expensive breakage!

Many Thanks

Weaver,

I believe it is just the transmission taking up the slack. I have had this on mine a couple of times and now just pause a little between changes to let the transmission catch up.

But then again as I know nothing about cars (mechanically anyway) I'm probably talking c**p

DaveW,

Thanks for that at least I can tell him that it happens to someone else too. That sounds feasible, there's alot of spinny bits in the transmission that have to catch up with each other when you change gear. Can anyone who's run at the Pod say if this has happened to them?

Hi there

I have an EVO 6, one friend has a 22B, another had a TypeR and another had a UK turbo. When accelerating hard they all do it. I guess it is nothing to worry about. Anyway it gives that extra back slamming into the seat!!

Thumbs up

Thanks Liam that should put his mind at rest. It must be transmission ****** then if they all do it. I must admit it doesn't should too good, a really loud bang/crack that makes you wince, but if it's standard equipment then I s'pose that's OK. I'll let him know. Many thanks again

If you are aggressive enough with it, the rear diff can bang loudly as you change up as you impose instant load upon it.

If it's coming from the engine bay, get the engine mounts checked and make sure the exhaust is correctly mounted/retained Etc.

Mike.

Mike T,

I was sat in the back seat when Chris was accelerating hard and it made a loud bang from the rear so it definately could have been this. But then on Sunday it sounded as if it was coming from the engine bay, weird!

Thanks

Er.. guys.. not meaning to upset the boat here, but my MY94 WRX (same stable as the MY93?) doesn't do any of the above. Sweet as a nut when ranted. How about lack of oil in the diff, or worn teeth? I'd be worried.
Get Power Engineering or someone to check it out. No UK dealer will look at an import

Question

Thanks Pilch

It really doesn't sound nice so I thought it couldn't be right. I suppose the real solution is to get it checked out by a Scooby master.

Anyone of a really good garage that could look at it in the Midlands?

Cheers

Hi,

I think your friend needs to modify his driving technique to avoid this - I can't imagine that it will do the rear diff any good at all.

It is possible to drive more sympathetically without really being slower..

Cheers,

Alex
