Question

Just a quickie!
I have a my00 and have noticed that when I stop on a slope and apply the handbrake and then release the footbrake that the car moves an inch or two, why is this and is it right?

Question

MY00. Yes me too?
I'm only guessing here but maybe there some sort of anti-warp or 'anti-not-release-the-handbrake-when-the disk-cools' mechanism fitted to these things?
Or has it got to do with the transmission?

A bloody Citroen XM rolled into my BX (dont say anything) that I had once. The XM had the handbrake on the front and when the disks cooled the car rolled forward in the car park and hit mine. And the sodding Ins was bump for bump so I lost 2yrs NCB!!!

Check that the back wheels are moving. Sounds silly, but what is probably happening is that you are lifting off the pedal, so front brakes are now no longer working, as you are on a slope this means that the front wheels are free to move, and roll back due to the slope. As your car is not solid but has suspension this movement translates to a lift on the back of the car, which will feel like the car rolling back.

Don't worry about the handbrake coming off as the discs cool as they work on a small drum brake that is part of the rear brake disc. If you have a look you will be able to see this.

Question

Just to clarify things, when I had the back of the car off the ground the other day to fit the mudflaps I noticed that even with the handbrake on I was still able to move the wheel, probably about 2" at the edge of the wheel. Strange!!!!!!

RON,

Yep mine does this too (MY99). Must be a standard Scooby 'Feature'. Think its been covered before. To do with the handbrake mechanism. Takes some getting used to if you want to be smooth and not jolt passengers.

Ron,

My MY99 used to do it badly too. Asked Vale to check it at the 1st service. They did, and whilst it still does it to some extent, it's MUCH improved.

Bit unnerving until you get used to it, eh?
