Ok, I know the whole thing about depreciation has been done to death, but it seems that there is virtually no demand for second hand scoobs, whatever the price. I have an 18 month old STi7 and my boss has an Outback H6 of the same age, and no dealer will offer anything for them. So far advertising has produced zero response. I just wonder why this is? Is it simply due to the running costs or what? In contrast, my wife's MINI cooper has hardly depreciated and I could sell it three times before breakfast. strange, innit?

Try selling the MINI private quickly then come back to me and tell me how easy it is.

1) Its an Outback

2) Its an STI7

I have nothing against either of them personally but lets face it, alot of ppl have.

 

Boro - maybe you're right. Personally I think the STi7 is a bloody good car. The Outback is so-so, but for 50% of it's original cost at 18 months old that's gotta be a bit of a bargain.

Other than your Audi/Merc/BMW brigade 50% at 18 months isn't bad.

The second hand market is crap unless you have some really desirable metal.
Looked at a an Omega 3.2V6 Elite last week,150mph, RWD, every toy fitted, 3 years old, 40k miles, when new list price of £31000, advertised at £8500.

With a scoob you have the high running costs, the problem of leaving it anywhere and now carjacking etc. There are now a few more alternatives than before Skoda RS, Leon Cupra R, Civic etc all are going to effect the amount of buyers willing to take on Scoob ownership.

I think if you can afford the insurance and maintenance cost (tyres etc.) then you can probably afford a new car. The 3 year warranty giving peace of mind as well. So s/h would have to be quite a bit cheaper to tempt a buyer.

Therefore secondhand value of young cars will be proportionately less than cheaper to run cars

 

Everthing will sell @ the right price. Im curious what your asking price is???

 

How much is he willing to sell the Outback for?

 

15k for the STi7. FSSH, just had new pads and an oil change, 26k miles, proper stereo with active sub, amp and multi-changer, prodrive xenon driving lamps. bargain or what?

as for the outback, as it seems it is only worth about 13k, the guvnor is considering buying it from the company for the redemption value of the finance.

Lets face it the reason they turn heads from age 5 to 75 is that they are a bit special, people love special but not many think they can afford/justify the cost of owning special.And then out of curiosity they phone D/Line or N/Union or AA (THE LIST GOES ON) for a quote and thats the end of that.

 

smithers - exactly that happened to me. one of our managers at work was interested in trading up his GSi for my car - but the £1100 insurance killed it.

The recent theft and insurance horror stories are having a knock on effect with regards to second hand values of Scoobs.

If your old enough to remember when the Sierra Cosworth first came out they were going for silly money until the insurance companies wouldn't touch them, by the end of the 80's you could pick a young low milage example up for five or six grand as they were virtually un-insurable, by the mid 90's these cars had nearly doubled in price with more reasonable insurance.

I hope the Scoob doesn't go that far.

As mentioned above its a combination of things.
My Impreza Value Equation (IVE) developed over the years is :

(Brilliant to drive) Less (Expensive to service, insure, fuel) Less(Attractive to thieves) Divided by (Lots of interesting alternative cars) LESS (Unrealistic dealer prices&margins)
Equals = (Demand)

 

Maybe it's just that particular model. When I was selling my 95 WRX (hardly a rare model) back in June, I put it in the autotrader, had around 15 calls, and sold it on the first weekend for £7k to the first viewer.
