Question

my uk99 has developed a bad smell of burning rubber.
it may sound wierd but it only appeared after i had my so2 pole positions fitted.
i cannot pin it down.
also,is it right that the gap behind my rear wheels and the shock absorber at the top centre of wheel is only just big enough to get a finger in.
(who wants to go and get their hands dirty and try theirs?)
i discovered this while checking clearances around the tyres in case something was rubbing.
any thoughts appreciated.

Pete,

yes the clearance is fine, and about the same on my car with S02s. No idea what the burning smell may be, have you located where it is coming from (ie any of the wheels), or do you just smell it in the cabin whilst driving ?

Happy my man,

I have got the same prob. but it's intermittent and the dealer didn't find it when I took her there (MY95). Smell only comes through when idling after "giving it some". Smell comes through the vents and not in the engine bay. Not every time though. Also started 'round about after I fitted SO2s on the miniscule 15 inchers, but never connected the two - till now!

Is your an all-the-time pong or just an "idling" one?

Hi,

This might be relevant if you don't have a/c..

I remember reading that sometimes the a/c compressor electrical connector isn't properly tied up, and comes into contact with a heat shield. It then melts and produces a horrible smell...

Check between the back of the radiator fan and the front of the block for anything that might be coming into contact with a heat shield.

Not sure if it is specific to a particular model year.

Cheers,

Alex

Pete - thanks for raising this. I probably wouldn't have bothered chasing this any further until it started smoking!

Alex - cheers mate. Will have a look at it daylight to see if anything's dangling where it shouldn't be!

Once again . . . scoobynet to the rescue
