The contract on my WRX is up next month and I will be handing the car back. Question is: the second annual service will be due (it's a two year contract), so am I obliged to get this done before giving it back?

I'm guessing there's two scenarios: mileage < 20,000 - don't get the service done, mileage > 20,000 - get it done.

Any advice appreciated.

mines due in january and i am considering asking the hire co. if i can buy the car.

last car i had (vaux vectra sri ) asked for a price and they wanted 2K LESS than bottom book value!!!

Things in our favour are:-

you know the car (any niggles etc)
well looked after?

the hire co. will only get trade/auction price anyway.

they dont have the hassle of getting it picked up valeted etc.

no auction entry and commision to pay

give it a try

I have thought about this but have my doubts about the second-hand market for MY01 at present - don't want to get stuck with something I can't sell on, even though it's a beaut

does depend on the contract you took out in the first place. I guess it was without maintenance?..

Also what was the yearly milage agreed, as there is usually a sting in the tail regarding excess milage.

also they seem to expect the cat to back in the same condition as when supplied

so , no scratches, no stains on carpet etc. My experience is that they clobber you for everything they can that is in the contract!

We used to send all our cars to the bodyshop for a touch up b4 they went back.

Yep - no maintenance. There are one or two unauthorised mods: I've already made arrangements to have these reversed. Car is otherwise immaculate but may slightly exceed the contract mileage.

 

Guess you don't deal with us then... We do have a WRX due back next month tho

We are very fair on e-o-c charges... we like repeat custom and it's a small world - and we're a small company!

As the terms probably say, depending on the cont. mileage, if you are due the service, we'd expect it done, if it's not due, then it's not due.

With regards to wear & tear.. again we try to please and be realistic. You can tell if a car's been cared for. It it has and theres a few issues, so what. if it's not cared for and there's more than a few issues, it's recharge time -unless you collect and put right within 14 days!

So if the service is due on the car's second birthday, and that is also the last day of the contract, it probably wouldn't matter if I hadn't had it done, unless I'd actually gone over the mileage interval, i.e. 2 x 10,000 miles...

 

You're usually allowed 500 miles or a month (whichever is shortest) either way on the service side, but this varies between contracts so check.

The condition of the car should reflect no more than fair wear and tear for it's age and mileage. Mechanical defects and anything more than a small sratch should be put right before return.

A lot of these things are subjective, but put yourself in the contract companiy's position and you won't go far wrong.

Out of interest does anyone know what one is likley to pay for contract hire on a WRX sti. I am considering buying one but maybe this would be a better way? Also who do you use for contract hire, does the dealer do it?

Have checked with the finance co and they have offered me the car to buy at what I reckon is a reasonable price - slightly more than Parker's "Private/Good" figure for the standard car but reflects the £4K of extras (PPP, 18s etc).
