just networked my laptop, (upstairs) to my desktop (downstairs) is there any free prog out there so we can send messages without actually being on the net, i.e msn messenger. ??

Hello

You can go to the command prompt and type:

net send 199.1.1.1 Hello!

replacing the IP address with the machine you wish to send the message to.
