Just started new job and have inherited half completed network. The EPS SDSL circuit is up and live and this is connected to the LAN via a Cisco 1710.
The problem I have is no-one (inc installation company!!) can tell me the IP address of the LAN interface on the 1710. Is there a sneaky way of finding this out from the LAN or am I looking at a full system reset?
I've got all teh .pdf files from the Cisco website so am quite tempted to just do it but would rather there was a way to find out. The bad news is there is no console cable so I only have an ethernet connection and I have tried all teh common private IP address.....on Win98 too (damn I hate having to reboot every time )
Cheers, Jon

I don't know the exact answer to your question, but I had a mate that woz cisco trained, I remember these units had a serial port that you connect a NULL modem cable to, they could then be configured using this?
Maybe?

I've just knocked up a quick sketch of the rear
Naturally, I asked Cisco to host it for me
However, I have no other cable other than a Cat 5 Ethernet cable

Ok, next time I come up with a silly suggestion like that get me to ask my mum instead
He has helped a bit, but not much
I still think you gonna need to terminal in, this will be through the console port, I take it you got stuff to make RJ45? You could find pin outs on the internet somewhere.
Once terminaled in use HyperTerminal and the unit will communicate like a dumm terminal
You can then type commands;
show runnnin-config
should spew out it's config file, show ip-interface or show ip or show ip-int (one of those???) should spew out it's ip settings
However, he thinks that it will be likely that it is password protected, if it is you wont be able to terminal in
I do have a couple of other suggestions;
If you have set the TCP/IP settings to 'obtain an IP Address automatically', and plug the router into the network port of the machine. Win98 normally when it boots searches for IP address of equipment connected to it, then assigns an IP on the same subnet, but with an available number. XP does this many many times better though.
Are there not any other machines connected, you could look at their gateway setting?
Kill the engineer that set the router up and didn't bother putting a sticker on the bottom

By the way, that wot you said about the Page Refresh worked a treat mate.
It's not exactly what I want, but it's a darn site better than what we had. If it's not taking the **** too much, do you mind me describing exactly what I'm doing, and you just giving me your view on it?
Not right now obviously, we're both at work and don't wanna get caught slacking - he he
