Hi,

This may sound like a lame question and I may get rediculed but can anyone shed some light on the following.

I am running Small Business server 2000 with ISA server, I have an ADSL (always on connection) connection which has an IP address given to me by the ISP. The Router I am using is an Vigor 260 which has an internal non routable IP address assigned to it (192.168.0.x) and the ISP address. My Server has two network cards within it one which is on same IP range as the internal on the Router and the other is on another internal ip range for the network (192.168.1.x).

I am able to connect to the internet no problem and so are all the clients, but I cannot ping web addresses from the clients from the cmd promt or external IP address? Anyone know why or how to resolve this?

Also I am trying to get exchange up and running with a POP3 Connector. Everthing is there but when it tries to connect I get a system log issue of unable to resolve host. I have tried to set up POP 3 on the clients but they are unable to resolve the server name. Do I need to give my server an external IP address in order to pick up and deliver mail? if so how do I do this. My ISP has assigned a number of IP addresses to me which as its ADSL I have no idea what to do with them?

Please help me, I am going bonkers!!!!!!

Cheers

Firstly suggest that you get something like a Sonicwall Soho/Tele as a firewall to put between the Vigor and your server.

Why not get an smtp feed to the ISP provided ip address, then use Exchange to collect that as opposed to using POP3? ISP will route mail for whoever@yourdomain.x to that IP.

You should not need to give your server an external address. You need to buy a Sonicwall & get the Vigor (web interface) to pass all traffic to it. Open up the ports required (http, smtp) to the external world and give the internal facing connection an ip of, say, 192.168.0.1. Server is 192.168.0.2. Tell Sonicwall that http/smtp should be passed to 192.168.0.2 & job done there.

At the server, make Sonicwall the default gateway on that card.

Are you running DHCP on the server? If so, set the internal server card up as the gateway for handed out addresses.

You should be running DNS as well.

SMTP traffic coming in to you will be directed to the IP address assigned by the ISP, it'll go to the Vigor, the vigor will pass it straight through to the Sonicwall and the sonicwall knowing what to do with it, passes it to the external nic on the server, where it is picked up by exchange and dealt with.

Spare IP addys, just store against another day

Thanks for that.

I will get myself a Sonic Firewall and get the ISP to forward all mail to the Fixed IP address which will be on the Router. I do have another question, I am unable to launch the Vigor 260 Web interface, any ideas why not.

Also the server in question is running ISA Server (what a pain in the butt) will this make any difference?

I know I am being niave but I do not have any experince of setting up an exchange server. Can you point me in the right direction fro this as well(I know I am being ckeeky)

Cheers

Dunno re Vigor - try connecting a PC direct to it and make sure the IP is correct on the card.

ISA server will be & always is, a bugger..

You will have to open SMTP in there as well. Thats also prob why ping isn't...

There are a couple of advertisers on this bbs (see ScoobyShop that'll be able to supply you with Sonicwall equipment (+ some advice if you ask nicely )

Exchange is relatively simple over SMTP, get the first part sorted out. You are running DNS I take it?

You want VPN access as well? You hosting a webpage? What are you trying to achieve?

For what its worth, I'm currently unemployed & available

Cool,

The office has no email so that is the first port of call, we are using Webmail at the moment which isnt good!!!!!

Any idea how to enable SMTP in ISA Server?

Eventualy I will want to host a number of websites if that can be achived? VPN is not on the list at the moment, but may be in the future.

I am going to rebuild the server and will omit the install of ISA server if it lets me which will make my life a whole lot eaiser.

Which of the Sonicwall firewalls would you suggest (we have 1 server, 20 clients)

Cheers for all your help.

Exchange 2000 doesn't support Pop3 connections but STFW for PopRoute and that'll do for a single domain in the short term until SMTP sorted.

Yes, publish the SMTP server in ISA.

Multiple websites on one IP is not a problem

I'd live with ISA and learn how to use it - good for AUP and other stuff as well. Can't have too much security IMHO.

I have used the Tele3/SoHo product and it does just dandy for that size setup - about a monkey to buy.

Wink

PTMW,

The configuration that you described, would it work without the firewall?

Yes it would but although you have ISA as a firewall, you're already in the hallway to the network (ie the Server) when you get it to do its guarding.

So stopping unwanted traffic BEFORE it gets to ISA is more preferable obviously. Also helps if MS "vulnarabilities" [sp?] are not exposed to the internet directly. £500 against how much downtime for a compromised company network?
