What's the cheapest way to get a scooby key?

When I bought my MY99 scoob, it only had one key with it. Now the alarm fob is getting quite dilapidated and I'm also worried that I might lose mine and have no spare. I've had that happen once before with a different car, and the buggeration is out of all proportion. Subaru main dealer are talking in the region of £150.00 all in, inclusive of key, alarm fob, and recoding of old and new keys to a new code. Any suggestions?

Bejezus!! I was hoping to get me one - but not for that price !!! Coding them is easy - don't let the dealer charge for that!

Is the alarm/immobiliser a sigma?

You can code the fobs yourself!

Are the UK scoob keys coded and have an alarm fob on?

The Jap ones don't.

On a MY99 the alarm fob would be separate from the key. There is, however, a transponder thing in the key which allows Subaru to charge you an arm and a leg for reprogramming, I think. Programming the Sigma fob is easy - it's in the manual.

Alternative is to get fob from Sigma and spare key from local key cutting place. Then remove transponder from key and stick it in the steering column.

Or so I've read.

To code the transponder in the key, you need to find a garage that has diagnostic equipment that will interface with the scoobs ecu.

The ones that do, normally have a fixed rate to code keys, reset airbags etc. Only takes a minute to do. But they'll be cheaper that the main dealers.

Our family garage offers the service, but they don't have correct pod to interface with the scoob's ecu

What Slowbay says to do this on the cheap. Find a local key cutter and see here for a cheap remote fob for the Sigma alarm.

Yes that'll work. But effectively, your immobilser will only be half as good, as the part where the key needs to transmit to the car, will be permamently on. Un-noticeable to look at, but will make a thieves job a lot easier.

I got a cheap spare key, in the cheapest possible way.

Bought an original blank, less than a tenner: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Bla...item20b630aa40

Had it cut, 3 quid.

Then bought a second hand lockset from here for 40 quid.
now the confusing part. Took the TWO working transponders from the keys, placed them in my old and new key. Then swapped the reciever unit, under the dash over.

So, no need to change any of the locks, and you have two working keys.

I then made some money back selling the old lockset with one chip. So probably did only cost me a tenner in total.

Under the steering column area. There is a metal plate securing it in place. But thats just the brain.
The part that picks up the key, is a loop around the ignition barrell.
