Has anybody experienced problems with Impreza gearboxes? Mine developed a major whine / mechanical grinding noise (in 3rd gear only), with vibration through the gear change. Third then jumped out under acceleration, accompanied with a very distressing grating sound. Third gear no longer exists! Its now in the dealer and I'm nervously awaiting news (especially with Rally of GB only 1 week away!!).
Has anybody experienced anything similar?
Please let me know.

Sounds very nasty, and I haven't heard of any others do this.

My gearbox has a slight whine in 1st/2nd gears, but I'm not worried about it. My previous one did the same and is still running fine. I reported it to the dealer who said that "they all do that" or words to that effect. I test drove a brand new demonstrator, and it was louder than mine!

Your car might be off the road for a while, depending on parts availability and the problems they find once they look inside, so I would see if you can make alternative arrangements for the RAC.
