Question

On Jap Exporter sites, I've seen the phrase FOB. Does anybody know what that means?

Also, has anyone got a rough idea of how much to add to a japanese price for shipping, tax etc?

Cheers guys and gals.

FOB is Free (or sometimes Freight) On Board - applies to sea transport only. FOB is what's called an "Incoterm".

It means the supplier (exporter) pays for getting the goods from them to the port. They also pay to clear customs in the suppliers country. Once on board (called crossing or passing the ships rail), you then usually pay for the transport and insurance.

Another expression is ex-works where you have to collect from the seller and all costs are your problem.

Hi Steve, tax varies by product type (called a commodity code or ICN code) if you contact C&Excise they may be able to help otherwise your Jap supplier should know, on the imports we bring in 6% is about average; if u r cheeky ring ADL Blue Print on 01622 833007 they are a leading UK importer of aftermarket Jap Parts. Also a call to a courier company like DHL may help as they handle duty charges on imports in vast qtys.
Cheers Rich

Thanks for the help people.

I was looking at the prices for imported motors. They look pretty cheap. I know there are a few hidden costs which will bring the price up but I wasn't sure by how much.

£2K? £3K?

Anyone any ideas?

Shipping will cost US$68 per M3 (a Scooby 'Wagon is 10.53 M3); Import Duty at 10% will be levied on the cost of the car, the FOB charge plus the carriage with VAT @17.5% on the sum of this. Allow for about £200 for port charges and customs clearance. I'd think long and hard about buying a car sight unseen from an internet site.
